My holiday in TUNISIA (July 2003)

My holiday in Tunisia... where to begin?

I have an idea - have a look at the bloke on the camel. Handsome, right? I know. Now - this is the cool part - I am actually married to him.

I know what you thinking. 'Really? Wow!!' Yes, sometimes I wake up and I thing 'wow' to myself .

There were quite a few things really great about the holiday and some things that were not so great... I'll start with the great ones: Camel riding; definitely in my top 3 (with the scuba diving and sunset watching). There was this bloke in the reception of our hotel, talking to everyone, selling camel rides. Promising to take you to the farm in a horse carriage, then into the country on a camel or a horse (depending on your preference), into a caf' and back, they dress you up (and you do look silly but what the hell), you dance while they play drums and sing; then you watch a woman make some bread and at the end of it all you eat the bread (yummy) and then they take you back to your hotel.

Doesn't sound like an adventure? Trust me- in some strange way it was. Just getting to the farm was like something from a different world. The camels...! ... mine was lovely (shame I haven't got a picture; big shame...) but there was something wrong with his steering and he'd pull to the right every now and then, straight into the bushes and more often into the biggest cactuses ever (told you, adventure). I am a bit embarrassed to talk about my belly dancing so I'll skip that, ok? All I'll say is that it was unexpectedly successful (I reckon I should wrap a towel around my head to pretend that I've got much longer hair, get a hair brush for microphone and then dance with all this equipment in front of my mirror - practising for next holiday... Or maybe not, I'm not exactly 5 anymore)

And then there was the picture taking, some more dancing and finally eating. A truly good day.

Oh, nearly forgot - I drove the horse carriage on our way back. That was fun (and if you really need to know - I'm definitely no good at it)

Now- what was not so impressive about our package holiday? I'm sure you can guess. The English culture that came with it. 90% of everything around the hotel was English - there was always something English on the menu (whether the real one or the 'cultural' one) blokes in football shirts, with golden chains, numerous ear rings and tattoos, their obese girlfriends... Big Brother on a big TV, 'Life is Life' and Brian Adams within minutes from each other... and a lot of shit music that I run away from which was being played very loud to us and everyone within about 10 sq.miles till all sorts of time

Every night I was thinking about Alice, the angel that gave me my earplugs when I could not sleep in Cusco. Bless her and bless the earplugs. Without them I'd go mad from sleep deprivation. With them I was still able to hear it all but instead of it driving me Completely Mad in was only pissing me off... Yes, every nigh, till the small hours.

Another great thing: scuba diving

Scuba diving was exciting. Scuba diving was fun. Scuba diving was cool.

Ok, let me put it this way - I can't swim under water & I opened my eyes under water only about once in my whole life (Cally pool) and generally speaking I do not consider myself to be a good swimmer. So when these guys appeared by the hotel's swimming pool with a free trial I was there wanting to have a go. And it didn't take me a minute to know that they sold it to me. I was going for the next morning dive no matter what. It was So Cool (!)

It was pretty easy - all I needed to do was to trust the instructor and do as I was told. Nothing more, nothing less. And so I did... We saw all sort of wonderful stuff under water - sunken W.W.II Italian ship, fish(s) fish(s) and even more fish(s), little thing that would grab your finger when you touch it and a beer can. As I said - cool.

There wuld be so much more to say about the holiday. But it's late now and I'm getting tired and sleepy. So I'll leave it at this:
If I had a 'Cheesy Gallery' I'd put all of these on the wall, the same way they are here (only in 'proper' sizes). The sunsets were the best parts of my holiday. Peaceful and touching.
