"Oh no, you gasp, this one could go on forever."
"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up. That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life". (John 3:14-16)
This passage of Holy Scripture contains the very heart of the Gospel. The word Eternity means something far more than endlessness. It is not a synonymous term with 'everlasting', although many often use it as such.
Eternity transcends all Time, though we might, as believers think of time as endlessly prolonged everlastingness. In our Bible reading we are clearly told that the Life of God in the soul is called 'Eternal'. (John 3:15), by which is meant not only its unbroken continuance, but also more importantly its inherent and intrinsic quality.
The soul itself will have an unbroken continuance. In thinking of Time as infinitely extended - which is the common idea of Eternity, we have to think of more than simply quantity. For 'Eternity' is the very antithesis the exact opposite of Time.
Eternity denotes an internal quality, which cannot be measured by the ticking of a clock, even if it could go on ticking forever.
Eternity so far exceeds Time that, whilst it has no end, so likewise it had no beginning. Time, has both. Indeed, Eternity is really the annihilation of Time and Space, just as the less is swallowed up of the greater.
Horology of earth, the science of making timepieces or of measuring time is no measure for the aerology of heaven. Makes one think doesn't it
