BRUSHSTROKES OF BIBLICAL TRUTH

From the Pastor's Palette

Colours of Faith

The colours of faith are warm and bright. On the colour wheel of life's experiences faith is on the opposite side of the chart to dark greys and cold blue blacks of unbelief. On the colour spectrum, faith it is among the vermilion reds and oranges, vibrant and alive. Let me lay down five brushstrokes of the Colours of the Trinity showing the full tones and degrees of faith.

The source of Faith is in the Holy Trinity. It is the gift of the Father, His Son Jesus Christ is it's object, and the Holy Spirit places it in the soul and life of every believer.

(1) Brushstroke. The Faith of Apprehension when the soul realises and apprehends it's lost and undone condition by nature, and perceives that God's Word is true, and that it really does describe the vileness of our fallen human nature ruined from the Fall. At this point Faith grows in the heart, and the Holy Spirit so operates and increases the grace till it becomes:

(2) Brushstroke. The Faith of Appreciation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He becomes so real, so needful and so precious. Faith goes to Him, moves to Him, and needs Him, more than anything in the world. His Person and His Saving Work is revealed to us, and an interest in His love and in His blood are of paramount value. The believers appreciation of the power and excellency of Saviour of men leads to:

(3) Brushstroke. The Faith of Adherence, in which the hand of the soul as it were grasps the Saviour clinging to the Rock of Ages for Salvation in its totality. It is a great Salvation and it is free. Yet only empty hands can cling. All other support and refuge is discarded and of no value. It is 'Jesus only' until faith increases to:

(4) Brushstroke. The Faith of Appropriation. This is accompanied with a seeking to claim Him and knowledge that 'Jesus is mine and I am His.' All the treasures found in the Saviour we lay hold of and so Faith becomes for the rest of the believers life and in the final stages:

(5) Brushstroke. The Faith of Assurance, when the believer is assured of the continuing willingness of our Lord Jesus Christ to Cleanse from all sin and of His Power to lead and guide every step of the way. Our life can be clean, consecrated and colourful today and every tomorrow.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;
oh what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of Salvation, purchase of God.
Born of His Spirit, washed in His Blood.
