Jesus Christ His Kingship

The Lord Jesus Christ is the King of Kings, and His Kingdom may be examined and explored as we consider it together.

(1) It is UNIVERSAL, for His Rule and Domination extend to the Realms of Glory, of Grace, of Nature, and of Providence. “ Without Him was not anything made that was made” (John 1-3). All things are now committed into His ruling hand. Also His Kingdom is:

(2) SPIRITUAL, for He reigns in the hearts of his believing people. “The Kingdom of God is within you” (Luke17-21) ; and in the exercise of His sovereignty, He cleanses each obedient believer from all idols and all idolatry. (Ezekiel 36-25) And what good news that is for our generation. No rival is permitted on His throne. His Kingship and Rule are:

(3) ACTUAL, though unseen. We see second causes, and perhaps forget they are the instruments used by the Lord Jesus in the outworking and accomplishment of His purposes. In the exercise of His overruling power, he makes “All things work together for good to them that love Him” (Romans 8-28) His reign is:

(4) MEDIATORIAL in the present dispensational age in which we live. In the High Courts of Heaven He governs all on earth, and all things are ordered and governed so that in the end that shall prove to have utterly fulfilled the one supreme and single purpose of the Lord of the Universe, and have all been to the lifting of our Lord Jesus Christ on high. His Kingship is:

(5) REVEALED IN PART. Enough is seen to leave men without excuse. Every believer experiences unmistakable signs of the Lord’s presence. The eye of faith sees Him at times only dimly, yet He is seen. The hand of faith holds on to the Saviour at times only very feebly. Yet the trusting believer holds on. For in and through it all Jesus is still King, and soon now He will be revealed and manifested in:

(6) GLORIOUS TRIUMPH, “For He shall reign till He hath put all enemies under His feet” (1 Corinthians 15-25) So with C. S. Lewis we can affirm ‘I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.’
