Preaching the
Gospel
Martin Luther’s
preaching aroused the church from a thousand years’ slumber during the Dark
Ages now known as the devil’s millennium. It is easy to see and understand
why, when we discover how Martin Luther preached. He said, ‘I preach as though
the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified yesterday; rose again from the dead today;
and is coming back to earth tomorrow.’
But we preach Christ
crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But
unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and
the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the
weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how
that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are
called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the
wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things
which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised,
hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that
are. (1Corinthians 1: 23-28)
WHAT TO PREACH
A young preacher in a
university town was embarrassed and frightened by the thought of the criticism
that he was likely to receive from such a cultured congregation. He sought out
his father, an old and wise minister of the Gospel, and said to him, ‘I find
it hard to outline a sermon I can preach to these people. If I quote anything
from geology, there is the Professor Allwright the geology professor before me.
If I use an illustration from history, there is Professor Blight ready to trip
me up. If I use English literature for some reference the whole English
department will be ready to challenge me. What shall I do?’
Calmly the older man
replied, ‘Preach the Gospel, son! They probably know very little about
that.’
And he said unto
them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark
16: 15).
And
I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of
wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know
any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. (1Corinthians 2:
1-2).
INTRODUCING THE
PREACHER
A well loved Pastor
of a large black church introduced a fellow pastor and friend to the people for
the morning ministry service and said with real fire in his soul – ‘
Bruddah’s and sistahs, dis bruddah’s gwine to
preach a powerful sermon dis mo’nin’. He’s gwine to define de indefinable:
he’s gwine to explain de unexplainable; he’s gwine to dispense wid de
indispensable; he’s gwine to prove de unprobable;
an’ he’s gwine to unscrew de unscrutable’.
Please pray for and
encourage every Gospel preacher you know.
