PRIDE
OF PLACE AND A PLACE FOR PRIDE
“I have been proud and fulfilled in
every area of my life” said a friendly man in conversion recently. It was a
statement which made me think – no mean feat!!
The life and death of our Lord Jesus
Christ reveals poignant facts about pride.
PRIDE
OF BIRTH AND RANK
Is not this the carpenter's son? is
not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and
Judas? (Matthew13:55)
PRIDE
OF WEALTH
And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have
holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay
his head. (Luke 9:58)
PRIDE
OF RESPECTABILITY
Nathanael said unto him, Can there any
good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. (John
1:46)
PRIDE
OF PERSONAL APPEARANCE
For he shall grow up before him as a
tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness;
and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. (Isaiah
53:2)
PRIDE
OF REPUTATION
The Son of man is come eating and
drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of
publicans and sinners! (Luke 7:34)
PRIDE
OF LEARNING
And the Jews marvelled, saying, How
knoweth this man letters, having never learned? (John 7:15)
PRIDE
OF SUPERIORITY
For whether is greater, he that
sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am
among you as he that serveth. (Luke 22:27)
PRIDE
OF SUCCESS
He is despised and rejected of men; a
man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from
him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
PRIDE
OF ABILITY
I can of mine own self do nothing: as
I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but
the will of the Father which hath sent me. (John 5:30)
PRIDE
OF SELF-WILL
I can of mine own self do nothing: as
I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but
the will of the Father which hath sent me. (John 5:30)
PRIDE
OF INTELLECT
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye
have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do
nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. (John
8:28)
Pride fits well in five proud boxes.
Pride of face, pride of race, pride of
place, pride of pace and pride of grace.
I like the Pastor who was humbly proud
of his congregation I am still working that one out!!
