BRUSHSTROKES OF BIBLICAL TRUTH

What in the World is World?

The word "World" has various meanings in the Scriptures; but in every case the context makes its significance unmistakably clear. Studying Scripture, one must remember the saying, 'A text taken out of its context produces a pretext'.

(1) The word 'world' is used three times in (John 1-10) "He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not" Twice in the passage it denotes the material world, the third time it means the mass of mankind.

(2) In the striking verse of (John 15-19) "If ye were of the world, the world would love its own," etc, it signifies all the wicked.

(3) In (1 John 2-15) "Love not the world" it is used to describe every thing that is contrary to the Lord Jesus Christ.

(4) In (1 Corinthians 7-31) "They that use the world" it refers to all that is good in life in the world.

(5) At times Luke and Paul make reference to the Roman Empire with the word world.

(6) However in (2 Corinthians 5-19) " God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them, and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation." Here it clearly means the people of God who have repented and believed in the world.
