‘Apply yourself wholly to the
Scriptures, and apply the Scriptures wholly to yourself’
The subjects for Christian study can be
easily remembered from an acrostic on the word ‘study’
Study the Bible: by reading, searching, comparing and meditating.
Theology: the knowledge of God who has revealed Himself in His Word.
Universe: In the created Universe see the wisdom and power of God in all His
works.
Doctrine: By acquainting ourselves with sound conservative Christian Biblical
teaching.
Yourself: Remembering Paul’s advice to Timothy – ‘Take heed to thyself and
to the doctrine’.
Till I come, give attendance to
reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Neglect not the gift that is in thee,
which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the
presbytery.
Meditate upon these things; give
thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Take heed unto thyself, and unto the
doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and
them that hear thee. (1Timothy 4: 13-16).
Study to show thyself approved unto
God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth.
But shun profane and vain babblings:
for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
‘If a Christian neglects the Bible there is not much for the Holy Spirit to work with’.
