Introduction

It was the purpose of God always to maintain a testimony for truth and righteousness in the midst of an ungodly world.

She was the wife of a man that with all his faults was a righteous man

She was united to him in closest possible bonds – yet she perished

She shared her husband’s privileges

She was aroused

Begun to think over her life

Almost saved but not quite

Sermon Outline 5

(Holiness)  REFRESHMENT BETWEEN THE BATTLES

And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. (Genesis 14: 18)

Introduction

The strife recorded in Genesis 14 was no mere border affray.

It was an expedition for chastisement and conquest.

Chedorlaomer was the Napoleon of his age.

(1) ABRAHAM’S  REACTION

It is worthwhile pausing to observe Abraham’s reaction – because there is a challenge for us.

a. ABRAHAM’S THOUGHTS

What was he thinking? His thoughts were for Lot. He knew his weaknesses.

b. ABRAHAM’S CONCERN

He is an example for every Christian believer to follow.

Abraham had PRINCIPLE and CHARACTER.

Here was a jewel of the separated life.

c. ABRAHAM’S PLAN

He rallied his servants, trained domestically and military.

He planned a surprise attack

Faith taught Abraham how to act.

(2) ABRAHAM’S TEST

Dr. F. B. Meyer says

“The time of great success is often the signal for great temptation”.

a. THE TEST CAME ON HIS WAY HOME

Every time you have a victory be aware of a counter attack

b. THE TEST CAME FROM AN UNEXPECTED QUARTER

King of Sodom had escaped through the foothills and found the high road above the Jordan hills.

The King proposed an offer to Abraham.

But Abraham refused.

What a glorious outburst of the independence of a living faith.

(3) ABRAHAM’S SPECIAL QUEST

Something else happened on the way home

Abraham would not have come off so grandly in the second conflict because the Hebrews met Melchizedek the priest of Salem.

(a) NOTICE HIS PROVISION (v18)

He brought bread and wine and blessed the weary conqueror.

(b) NOTICE THE BLESSING (v19)

Was to Abraham through God the possessor of heaven and earth.

(4) DID NOT MELCHIZEDEK ENVISAGE THE WORK OF CHRIST?

He comes to us when He knows we are on the eve of a great temptation.

Some new revelation of Himself.

Some fresh glimpse into His character.

Some Holy thought

CONCLUSION: REFRESHMENT BETWEEN THE BATTLES

The secret lies in our personal contact with Christ and how much we know of His daily presence.

Sermon Outline 6

(Devotional)          PSALM 46:1-11

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

Come; behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen; I will be exalted in the earth. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

INTRODUCTION

A Psalm used for many occasions.

(1) A GREAT REFUGE

“God is our refuge and strength “

An affirmation of FAITH that connects us to DIVINE GRACE

(2) A GREAT GOD

“There is a river”

God the author of peace

In remembering the current Sennacheribs’s and evil rulers of the world scene, encourage yourself in the fact GOD IS

(3) GOD IS A GREAT DELIVERER

What an invitation “Come and see”

CONCLUSION

A GREAT REFUGE IN TROUBLE

A GREAT GOD WHO CAN DO ANYTHING

If we are willing.

A GREAT DELIVERER

Who will reign

 Sermon Outline 7

(Topical)      GOD’S CALL TO THE WORLD

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. (Isaiah 45:22)

INTRODUCTION

God’s call to this world.

The Old Testament is often viewed as old fashioned and out of date.

This world needs to listen to God’s Word and His Call – the international scene demands it.

(1) IT CALLS FOR ATTENTION

“Turn back to Me and be saved”.

God wants to free you from sins that bind you.

(2) THE CLAIMS ARE UNIVERSAL

“All the ends of the earth”

All power is given unto Me

From the head-hunters of Papua New Guinea to the witch-doctors of Africa etc.

(3) THE CHALLENGE IS SUPREME

“For I AM God and there is none else “

We are not dealing with a god with no eyes, or ears, or heart, a distinctive mass, a Buddha. God’s claim is paramount.

“There is none else”

CONCLUSION

God’s wake up call to the world.

And to some people today

I am coming Lord, coming now to Thee.

Holiness: A BRAND PLUCKED FROM THE BURNING

And the LORD said unto Satan, the LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? (Zechariah 3:2)

INTRODUCTION

John Wesley, the lad rescued from a burning manse, became England’s mightiest holiness preacher.

Let us linger a few moments in the Book of Zechariah chapter 3 and see some encouraging factors that can revolutionise spiritual life and experience.

(1) THE HEAVENLY ASSIZE 3:1

Satan stands to accuse.

“Is not this a brand plucked from out of the fire? “

In the Heavenly Assize Joshua is acquitted by the Advocate – the Adversary is dismissed. Joshua takes centre stage. A brand plucked from the burning.

(a) Joshua is chosen.

(b) Joshua is cleansed.

(2) JOSHUA IS RESTORED TO HIS OFFICE AS PRIEST (3:5)

(a) Joshua was clothed

(b) He is crowned.

(c) He is recognised by the people.

He empowered to live victoriously.

(3) GOD’S DIVINE PEROGOTIVES

(a)”If you walk in My ways”

(b) The commission.

The Christian must ‘Walk God’s Way’.

Must live according to Scripture

And seek the Salvation of the lost.

(c) COMPASSED ABOUT

“I will give you places to walk among those who pass by”

CONCLUSION

We began with a brand plucked from the burning.

The LORD JESUS, SAVIOUR AND SANCTIFYER OF MEN through the Cross made it possible to Cleanse Clothe Crown and Commission all who are willing to follow.

Sermon Outline 9

A MEMORABLE DAY

(1 Samuel 16:13) Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

INTRODUCTION

From whatever side we view the life of David it is remarkable.

It maybe that Abraham excelled in faith that Moses in power of consecrated fellowship with God, that Elijah in the fiery force of his enthusiasm, but none of these lived so many sided as the gifted son of Jessie.

(1) IT BEGAN LIKE ANY ORDINARY DAY

(a) Daybreak. Dawn. Sun. Peace.

Such no doubt was the daily experience of the shepherd lad.

(b) The duties of the day were ordinary

Strengthening the weak.

Binding up the broken.

Tending that which was sick etc.

(c) The breathless messenger

Hears of Samuel’s arrival

Of a banquet prepared

Of his fathers instructions.

Family life had been complete without him.

His brothers disregarded him

Tending sheep was his lot in life.

(d) Samuel Sanctified Jessie and His Sons

Ceremonial absolution

David needed more of these

The Spirit in Fellowship with his God

Robes stainless pure

Faithful fulfilment in the common place of daily life

(2) IT WAS THE CONSUMATION OF PREVIOUS TRAINING

We must not suppose that now for the first time the Spirit of God wrought in David’s heart but had never experienced this special unction

(3) IT WAS MINISTERED THROUGH SAMUEL

The old Prophet had conferred many benefits on his native land not least the care of its youth. The creation of the School of the Prophets was due to him

(a) Samuel’s reasoning

His grief of Saul and his fear of Saul’s temper and mood swings

(b) God’s Command

“Fill thine horn with oil and go, I will send thee to the house of Jessie take an heifer and I will thee what thou shalt do”

(c) Here is a Startling Revelation

Saul was rejected by God- before he was informed

David was anointed King- before Saul was openly disclaimed as King

(d) The Anointing of God’s Holy Spirit

Is a very sacred thing

Note the house of Jessie- David and his brother’s attitude

It is a very precious thing

It gives power for Leadership

It gives power for Kingship

It can be taken away if not guarded and appreciated

(4) IT WAS A DAY OF REJECTION

Seven sons of Jessie were passed over

Why was not Eliab the eldest chosen?

Because of hard speech

The Lord is rejected and despised – but He waits the final day

CONCLUSION

A Memorable Day for David

It was consummated by Previous Training

It was ministered through the Prophets

It was a day of rejection for some

 Sermon Outline 10

SPIRITUAL DIMENSIONS

The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. (Ephesians 1: 18-23)

Introduction.

How great is your spiritual horizon?

Some men’s vision is short sighted, it never gets beyond the letter I.

Others like Caleb have an imaginative, passionate love for regions beyond present attainments.

Spiritual dimensions are necessary for progress in Christian life.

FIRST DIMENSION – HOPE

What made these people live as they did in an world hostile to their claims?

(a) DARED TO BE DIFFERENT

They had something others did not have – HOPE. ‘The hope of His calling, the hope of eternal life. That ye might know the hope of his calling’.

SECOND DIMENSION – RICHES

‘The riches of the glory of his inheritance of the saints’.

This goes beyond the elementary bounds of Salvation. It opens up to us His Grace. His endowment through Pentecost

The disposition of Heart Holiness.

Purity in life.

Power in effective service.

Peace in heart and mind.

THIRD DIMENSION – POWER

This is a very interesting verse 19 because of four Greek words embedded in the text

(a) Power - Dunamis

The exceeding greatness of His power.

(b) Power – Enegea. Power to work

It is the Holy Spirit working – Divine energy power in effective service.

FORTH DIMENSION – POWER v19

(c) Power – Katros

His mighty Power

Impressive attractive appealing

Isn’t that what the church needs today?

(d) Power – Ischus

Power that is inherent

This resides in a person whether he uses it or not.

Great power – energy – a driving force

It is inherent deposited there by the Holy Spirit at Regeneration, for this is Sanctification begun.

Notice the source v20 Resurrection

Notice its extent v21 Principalities and Powers

Notice its effect v22-23 His Fulness

CONCLUSION

How large are your Spiritual Dimensions?

Here are three to explore HOPE – RICHES – POWER

Each is so vast that this life is too short to explore their fullest depths.

May you continue to make your discovery of these great dimensions in your Christian life
