What can we paint?

In the previous pages of Frank's Studio, we talked about a place to paint, a selected and designated area for that very purpose and also looked at the materials needed to hand that would enable us to start on the exciting experience of Watercolour Painting. All has been kept simple and straightforward; simplicity is the keyword in all my paintings and my painting vocabulary.

The next option we face, as would be painters and artists is, what subject shall I choose to paint? The following list of general subjects may help in your choice.

Still Life Flowers Landscapes
Buildings Gardens Snow
Animals Trees Sky
Portraiture Water Seascapes

You may have a favourite subject in your mind already. If so use that. Of course each painting we work on will have elements from other listed subjects.

Landscape painting will show sky, trees, fields and usually some water.
Flower painting and Still Life are an excellent composition.
Garden paintings may feature flowers and an old shed or broken fence.
Seascape paintings could include some boats, perhaps buildings in the quite harbour.

The combinations are limitless and so is your imagination, so stop worrying about it and relax. No painter that I know of has ever been attacked with a frenzied tube of Lemon Yellow or been struck with a menacing Sable Paintbrush, there is nothing to fear as we handle together the Colours of the Trinity.

Painting can be an added pleasure in life, drawing and composing a picture a joy. Help is readily available on your journey of discovery. It will be unpredictable at times. We will win some and we will lose some. Have a clear simple idea as to what you wish to paint; you will discover that accidents can turn out fine at times.

Sign each piece of work, and keep it for reference or as the basis of a new painting on a similar theme. Keep painting and practising, for success is waiting to surprise you!
