"Force 136"

SOE in Burma 2

But even without this, it exposed them to a whole new set of problems and  dangers, such as tropical diseases that they had no immunity to and the local food that lead to vitamin deficiency.

Fortunately a few of the Chinese and Malays that STS101 had trained up before the fall of Singapore had escaped the marauding Japanese and were still active.  But for those that were caught, usually had their heads parted from there bodies.

These were made up from Communists from the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) released  from Changi Prison and the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army or (MPAJA)

Though MPAJA and the MCP, suffered many setbacks in the early part of  1942, they were able to regroup their forces with new recruits and reinforcements from STS101 and the newly formed British Force 136.

One of the earliest casualties was that of Colonel Alan Warren RN from STS101 who had escaped the clutches of the Japanese by escaping to Sumatra.  When Sumatra was over run by the Japanese, Col Warren volunteered to stay with his men.

INDEX

Basil Goodfellow, John Davis and Richard Broom established a headquarters and school in Ceylon in July 1942

From which they were to launch a series of operations, the most notable one code named "Gustavus"

Some of the local agents were soldiers trained in India and Sri Lanka and were brought together by a few men such as Lim Bo Seng.  He was a celebrated member of the Chinese community who's family was involved in Brick and Biscuit manufacturing in Singapore.  His forthright anti-Japanese views were widely known and he also had high level contacts within the Kuomintang (Chinese army)

Late in 1944, Force 136 sent agents and supplies, first by submarine and later by air drops, into Malaya and the islands around the peninsula.  The MPAJA operated in every Malay state, harassing the Japanese with hit-and-run guerrilla warfare. They waged anti-Japanese activities and would eventually be involved in the Allied invasion of Malaya.
