The Play
Having never seen Shakespeare performed live, I was a little dubious about how well I’d understand the story and how the original text would translate into a modern setting. Needless to say I need not have worried. Director Trevor Nunn knew exactly what he was doing and the contemporary feel worked magnificently; the whitewash walls, dramatic lighting and giant telescreens made the play sit perfectly in the 21st century. The opening sequence- watching Richard dress in his Royal robes- was a dramatic start and the play continued at that pace, every scene full of action, drama and emotion. Supporting cast members were outstanding, with Ben Miles excellent as Henry Bolingbroke. Kevin gave an outstanding performance as Richard, the divine ruler, unwrapping the character from confident King to weak, overthrown ruler, full of emotion and regret before his demise.
The Stage Door
The play finished at around 10.30pm and 30 or so or us gathered outside the stage door. Kevin appeared at the door 10 minutes later and took up position at a new feature, allowing him to stay inside and fans to speak with him and pass things to be autographed to him through a little ‘window’. Kevin was polite and friendly as ever and thanked everyone for coming as he signed various items.
