North Wales and Snowdonia National Park

The Snowdonia National Park consists of the high landscape spanning south from the Conway river towards Lleyn in the west, southwards to Machynlleth and to Bala in the east. The mountain ranges of which Snowdon is best known, also include Tryfan, Moelwynion, Aran, Arennig and Cader Idris. Snowdon at 3,560 gives name to this beautiful area of park but the Welsh name of "Eryri" meaning 'place of eagles' is perhaps more evocative of the magnificence of the mountains. Rich in cultural heritage, natural beauty and wildlife the Snowdonia National Park offers untamed and unspoilt spectacular vistas, vast forest lands with ancient oaks, rugged highlands and pleasant vales.

Many picturesque towns and villages nestle within the Park area including Beddgelert between the mountains of Aberglaslyn Pass have charmed visitors for two centuries. Llanberis with its twin lakes and spectacular Pass is another good base from which to explore. Dolgellau's distinctive granite architecture is offset by the splendid Cader Idris, while Bala boasts the longest lake in Wales - in which prehistoric fish still swim.

Betws y Coed is picturesquely sited at the head of the lush Vale of Conway, which offers a contrast to the rocky peaks. Delightful walks on the Forest path of Gwydir or Coed-y-Brenin are a pleasant alternative to the challenge of the mountain tracks. In Snowdonia there are wonderful opportunities for every kind of outdoor pursuit, whether based on land or water or airborne.
