Swiss Cottage Handicap Competition

This competition has been going since 1997, when I started it to raise funds for my embryonic Swiss Cottage Scrabble Club, begun by Peter Shilling and myself in late 1995.
The club nights have been defunct since 1998 but club still turns out a team in the National Championships each year. The handicap competition has bumbled along amiably for twelve seasons, involving players from the London League and the Essex clubs, although I would welcome anyone in the Southern Counties if they wanted to have a go.
Being a handicap event it does really lend itself to being a national ranking tournament but one merit of it is that, as it is handicapped, it gives weaker players a chance to win something, and also presents players with the opportunity to get stuck into some best of three or five matches with someone, instead of just playing single games in league fixtures.
Much of the credit for keeping it going, by recruiting players from the Essex clubs, should go to the indefatigable Cindy Hollyer, without whose help it would have died out a long time ago. I plan to run it again next year, raising the entry fee from £3 to £5, still peanuts relative to the price of national tournaments, in order to give better prizes.

Handicap Pairs Competition

(currently suspended - awaiting tournament organiser)

2004 teams, handicaps, tablesPast Winners2003 competition results

The format is the same as in previous years. Firstly, we have a group stage where you play the three other pairs in your section. The six group winners, plus the second best team from the Kappa group and one lucky loser will go through to the quarter-finals. Successful pairs will then enter the knock out stage of the competition. Everyone should know the scoring system by now - 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. The challenge of the pairs is not just to win your games but also to overcome the handicap involved. For example, if Tim’s handicap is 5 and Terry’s is 85, then Tim will have to finish at least 81 points ahead for a win.

Handicaps are based primarily on the latest tournament ratings. I have, however, tweaked one or two as players may be going through a lean run of form or a purple patch! For those who do not play in tournaments I have based their handicaps on experience or looking at the latest London League table.

The group stage should be finished by no later than the 10th September. Matches can be played in any order. Please be flexible and offer as many dates as possible when making arrangements. I would suggest that pairs who make first contact be deemed the home team.

New for 2004! The Internet Scrabble Club which can be found at www.isc.ro can seriously reduce your travelling times! I encourage people to try out the site or complete those matches that are proving difficult to arrange. I expect most matches to be completed the old fashioned way but the option is there. I know many of you play on there already but please contact me if you need any assistance with the site. It is free and really easy to navigate round on. Be warned! The ISC will only fuel your Scrabble addiction.

The winners of the competition will receive £40 with trophies and keep the Frank and Tilly Moss shield for a year. Runners up will receive £20 and trophies. By the way no team has ever won the Pairs competition twice. The most successful pairs tend to have an improving player in their team or are just jammy with the tiles!

You can send me results by email or snail mail. All I need know is who won the games and by how much. My e address is chriskeeley2002@yahoo.co.uk or my home address is c/o 41 Alpha Rd, Chingford E4 6TD. My 'phone is 020 7536 0360 or try me at work on 020 7217 8410.

Good Luck!

Chris Keeley
