Druids Cross, Calderstones (5 Oct 2000)

This is an excellent site, I have not yet downloaded and articles or images. I certainly will do so as I continue my research on the history of Liverpool, as newcomer/novice to researching Liverpool's history I find this site a brilliant source and very easy to navigate, in fact just what I need.

At this time I am looking for information on Druids Cross, I am sure it was an old convent around the Allerton area of Liverpool.
If you have any information or know of anyone could you please let me know via Email. Thanks and keep up the excellent work.

Patrick Burke/Belinda Carroll of Garston (9 Sep 2000)

Only a flying visit this time but I'll be back for sure - it looks like a great site! I like the layout, very easy to get around! My connection to Liverpool is through my mother - she was born & bred there but it is my great-grandparents Patrick & Belinda Burke (nee Carroll) who we are trying to trace. They lived on Granville Road, Garston but where are they buried??? I have a date of death for Belinda so has anyone any ideas as to where I should start looking? All advice is welcome as I'm very much a new-comer.

Norris Green - new web site (30 Aug 2000)

A wonderful site! I was particularly impressed with The article about the origins of Norris Green, which I knew very little of. I lived on Townsend Avenue from 1973 until 1995, when after gaining a place at university to study History, I moved to London. I regularly visit Norris Green to see my family and friends. I am intending to create a web page for the area and I am currently gathering photographs and illustrations of the area. Can you help?

Sutton of Speke Hall estate/Oglet (8 Aug 2000)

Great homepage, I am at present doing my wifes family tree, found your site very informative, we have visited the area very recently and travelled down to oglet farm. My wifes ancestors were tenant farmers on the site of Speke hall and it is believed they signed the coming of age book given to Adelaide Watt at the age of 21 There names were Sutton and were in the area around 1750 to 1860's. Any info appreciated.

Duffin/Liverpool Workhouse (29 Jul 2000)

I have an interest in the workhouse Hospital because my mother Louise Duffin or Rogers may have began her life in Workhouse Hospital. She was born 29 September 1889, as an illegitimate child, or all indications seem to point me in that direction. I also believe that she was an indentured New York City Child because she was not on any records in NYC between 1900 and 1914 when she returned from a four year stay in England. I further believe her mother was very poor and worked as a domestic. She may have had a sister and both came to the United States in 1900 her sister the older maybe as a mother's assistant because she was only 11 years old. Her mother maiden name was Mary Rawlinson but in later life was using the name of Duffin and a Frank Rogers/ Duffin her father. She may or may not have been a Barnardo's child I have an application with this organization that is nearly four months in existent.
I have been told that you are knowledgeable in the workings of the hospital and you might be able to tell me how I may go about searching for this person? I appreciate that I maybe asking a lot from a busy man but I'm presently up against a brick wall and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Childe of Hale (1 July 2000)

Enjoyed your site. Will be back. Question: CHS email list seems to be the busiest on the net - many Irish and English seem to have emigrated from Cheshire, my wife's family included. But it seems that most of them had to board ships in Liverpool. Do you have any knowledge of the existence of lists of ship departures and passenger lists from Liverpool to the Colonies?

Mill St/Liverpool Maps (01 Jul 2000)

My grandfather lived in Liverpool after his father moved there from Amlwch in Wales. g'father owned two cobblers shops, reputed to have been in Parliament Street and Alt Street (sp?). However, my father's birth cert. shows place of residence as 40 Devonshire Place, and birth place as 147a Mill Road. The problem with this is that my mother and half brother disagree on the location of the shops. The only consistency is thta mother said they lived above one of the shops in Alt St., however, the birth cert shows them living above the shop in Devonshire Place.
I am guessing that all these streets are close to each other in one way or another.
Do you know where I could find street maps of Liverpool for a) present day, b) pre-WWII, and c) circa 1910. I live in the USA right now, so I can't amble down to a high street store you see :(
Any advice you might have would be gratefully received :)

I am chasing staff names at BROWNLOW HILL 1876-ish.

Fawcett, Preston, & Co. (12 June 2000)

I just found your web site describing your interest in Liverpool.
I'm going to be in Nevis, St. Kitts, and St. Croix for the next two weeks. I am trying to learn more about Alexander Hamilton's mother's family, the Fawcetts. I discovered that in Liverpool in the 18th century, a company named Fawcett, Preston, & Co. made sugar plantation equipment for the West Indies, and made steam powered mills in the 19th century.
Although all Hamilton biographers say that his father came to Nevis as a Huguenot in 1685 after the revocation of Nantes, is it possible that he is related to the Fawcett who ran this company? There weren't many Europeans on Nevis and it is likely that the company had a representative on Nevis. If a link were to be made, it would link Hamilton's family to part of the plantation/slavery machinery, a culture which Hamilton detested.
Do you know anything about Fawcett, Preston, & Co,?

St Davids church history (17 May 2000)

I am in the early stages of researching my father's family history. I am interested to know if you can tell me anything about St David's Church in Liverpool. My great great grandparents were married there on 15 May 1853. (I have the original marriage certificate). I have not been able to find out anything about the church although I have tried many other sites, but obviously not the right one! Could you please direct me? I am particularly interested in its history and where it is situated.

My great great grandparents were William Hill of Mary Anne Street and El(l)inor Martha Grindley(?) of Rupert Street. I think the streets are right! The minister appears to be W Hughes.
Many thanks!

Liverpool Docks (9 May 2000)

I have been trying hard to determine the truth of an item mentioned in my great-great-grandfather's obituary. It claims he was "at Liverpool in 1851 and saw Prince Albert and the Duke of Wellington lay the corner stone of the Victoria and Albert Dock."

Do you know if this would be what is called the Albert Dock today? From what info I am able to gather from the internet, the Albert Dock was opened by Prince Albert in 1846...(don't know if that would be the same dock, or if it would include laying any cornerstones). The dates are important to me because I am trying to research the man's real whereabouts, not just the stories (and already have found he had a first marriage in Dec. 1851 in Boston he never told his later family about, so he would've had to move fast if he'd been in Liverpool the same year...)

Any information or guidance you can offer would be very helpful and much appreciated, even if only the address of where I might write in Liverpool to ask these questions.
Many thanks and best wishes,

Michelle Stone in Marietta, Georgia, USA

Street Maps on the Net? (17 Mar 2000)

I was born in Liverpool in 1957 and left for the States with family in 1970 I am returning for a visit to Liverpool in mid April with my daugter and will hopefully walk her through my memory lane. However I cannot seem to find any good street maps on the net. I have a pretty good memory but after 30 years I need to study a map in order to visualise some things. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Catheral family (6 Feb 2000)

I was surfing on the internet, wanting to trace the Catheral family back from the 1300s, when they came to Chester. John Catheral came to Cheshire from Lancastershire, from a place called Catheral. I am mostly interested in geneaologic links in Lancastershire, but I REALLY enjoyed your web pages, with the family pages, the old bands, etc. I was born in 1954 and have a husband and three sons, live on a farm in east Tennessee, near the Smokey Mountains...thanks so much for any help, and keep the good work.

Ireland Family (Hale) (24 Nov 1999)

I've just come across your pages dealing with Hale and wonder if you can point me in the right direction of info on the Ireland family. In particular 16th century. When Richard Risley was eighteen his father died and his guardian, Sir Thomas Botelier granted the guardianship to Sir John Ireland, 20 May, 9 Hen. VIII. At some point Richard married Alicia, daughter and heir of Sir John Ireland. She was divorced 17 June 1536, having herself sought the divorce on the pleas that she had married Risley during the lifetime of her husband Thomas Stanley. It is possible that Alicia's previous husband was the Revd Thomas Stanley, a relative of the Earls of Derby, who was allowed by papal bull to hold other livings while he was minister at Winwick in 1558. Do you know of any sources where I could find for instance the date of their marriage or of the the birth of their son Thomas Risley who was declared base born in 1543 ? Any pointers would be very welcome.
regards
Dave Risley

Thomas & Elizabeth Power/Harry Bailey (24 Nov 1999)

You appear to have done a good job of the Work Houses. I am looking for my ancestors, Thomas Power (1819-90) and Elizabeth Power (1818-1888) who are buried in Section A Right No 911 in Toxteth Park. Neither they nor their children appear in the 1881 Census for some unknown reason. The main curious one I am looking for is Harry Bailey Power who died at 18 years of age in the September Quarter of 1875, in Liverpool. It is strange that he should die at that age, having grown up.
Warren C.O.Power, Ballarat, Australia.

Childe of Hale (24 Nov 1999)

Do you know of any websites where I can get good info, like the size of the bed (and the size of the Childe too) I'd be very grateful. I know I found one once some time ago, read about the modern medical view of him, what the condition was that made him grow so big....there are faint (very!) bells ringing about a ?sister...or maybe just a female person? Thanks in advance.
