Good morning Mike, Your information on the West Derby Union Workhouse for the Sick Poor is of great importance to me. My great-grandfather was an inmate there in 1881 and I have been trying to find records relating to this institution. I will be doing research in Liverpool on Feb. 16 and 17 (at Wirral Archives - as his wife and children were in workhouses there at that time). I will be staying at the Britannia Adelphi and wondered if the records are in the library which I know to be near that hotel.

What a find! I keep being drawn back to the Liverpool area in my family research work (the latest area of interest is West Derby in the 1850s) and I came across this website by chance. I can see I'm going to have to come back when I have much more time - it has so much to contribute. I have posted two queries to the bulletin board today, and look forward to some feedback. Thanks again Mike for such a well-presented site. I only wish I was a local and I could enrol in one of your courses!

Brought up in Tudwal street, Off Speke Road. Remember there being an Irwins grocers at the corner of Church Road and Speke road, later became Tesco.Next was a Blue union office, then the liverpool saving bank.then there was an entrance to a scrap yard, followed by a small shed like building which was a tea type cafe used primarily by the tram and bus drivers and conductors who used Garston as a terminus. The entrance to the scrap yard was closed up by building a small newspaper kiosk, this was about 1956-57

Regarding your rather idiotic comment (in the piece about Hitler in Liverpool) about a 'local writer' putting a 'fake' photo on his website - anyone with common sense knows that the writer isn't saying "this is an actual archive photo" - we all know that's it's a: RECONSTRUCTION. I think the Radio 4 programme was utter boring an inaccurate nonsense, and would rather read Ms Hitler's account because, she was there.

Mr King is entitled to his views, but despite his insulting approach he has missed the point. He presumes that an uncaptioned "RECONSTRUCTION" is obvious to everyone (the world wide web remember), and that the only evidence Hitler was in Liverpool is contained in Bridget Hitlers memoir - discredited almost universally by academic historians, including Professor Sir Ian Kershaw, the highly respected Hitler biographer. Mmm...Ronnie King_lfc of Woolton the Pete Price fan, who believes Bridget because 'she was there' or the Prof?...tricky... I hear Liverpool FC fans describe their version of the Derby match 'because they were there'. Cant say Ive ever agreed. And I was there too. Love, Lee Carsley

Hello royden Family. I used to live and work in Liverpool and enjoy your site. I left liverpool 1959 and have only been back twice for a day visit, can hardly find my way around. I have been trying to find out about my fathers family Grierson he died 1941 when I was 11 weeks old any Griersons out there? If anyone can help, please email me. I've been an Evertonian since I was 4 along time ago. Keep up the good work. Gay

It's amazing what pops us on a search engine when you type in "Barry Horne-Everton" You probably won't remember my name "Sir" as you didn't actually teach me, but I’m sure you'd recognise my face as you taught a few of my friends, Nigel Agnew to name one! I too sit in the Top Balcony, may see you next season, Just thought I’d leave a message "Up the Blues" Andy

I found this great site quite by accident from a BBC History link. As I am researching the temperance movement in Liverpool 1830 to 1900, I hope to make some contacts, and fill in lots of missing aspects of this subject. Mike - did you have any older relatives (Father/Uncle perhaps), who served in the Liverpool Police Force during the 60s and 70s, I knew an Eric Royden who retired as a Police Superintendent and thought you may be related. Best wishes to you, and all who visit this site.
