Mick Farrens books

Needless to say I am a fan of Mick Farren, a very talented SF writer whose work does not get the attention it deserves. The first book I read was Phaid The Gambler, which is a masterpiece as far as I am concerned. I have read loads of SF and Fantasy by lots of authors over the years, and yet Mick Farrens books remain my favourites. If only someone could make a film out of Phaid or Their Masters War( that could give Starship Troopers a run for its money!) Check out the links below for info on how to get hold of the books new or check your local Read & Return for secondhand copies.

Book Title (English publisher/date)

Description

The Song of Phaid The Gambler [NEL, 1987], this was also published as two seperate volumes Phaid the Gambler and Citizen Phaid for the US market [ACE]

Stunning SF Fantasy epic. He wrote it in response to his publishers request for something like Star Wars. He said it turned out like a western - Maverick I think.

Phaid the Gambler [ACE 1986] and Citizen Phaid [ACE 1987] (USA publisher)

Song of Phaid split into two for the American market (Why?) and with a bit of a rewrite (again Why?). The cover of Phaid the Gambler reminds me of Moss Isley spaceport in Star Wars, complete with walker!

Protectorate [NEL, 1987]

...

Their Masters War [1988, Sphere, 1988]

As mentioned above this would make an amazing film. It chronicles the journey of a primitive native who is pressed ganged into the army of an alien super power to fight against their ancient enemy.

Corpse [NEL, 1986]

...

The Armageddon Crazy [Orbit, 1990]

...

The Quest of the DNA Cowboys [1976]

...

Synaptic Manhunt [1976]

...

The Last Stand of the DNA Cowboys [Orbit, 1990]
