Sorry if these have a Mk1 bias but as that's what I've got that's what I play with. Most should be the same on a Mk2 though

Fitting a Better Cabin light from a Ghia

Just do it
Required Tools:
Small blunt screwdriver (Swiss army knife works well)
Time Required:  3 minutes
Cost: £34

part number 6803425 is light brown
part number 6803426 is grey

This has got to be one of the easiest mods ever and very useful it is too. How many times have you had to turn on the cabin light for your passenger to read a map and wished it wasn't so bright or dazzling while your driving. Well here is the answer

Just swap your plain vanilla lamp for one from a ghia, that has map reading lights.

The centre bulb is the same wattage and just as bright, but you get two nice small map reading lights which are movable.

Its a straight swap so just lever out the old lamp, unplug the 2 connectors (3 wires) and plug in the new one then clip it back and your done

They are available in the brown or grey interior plastic and were even in stock at my Fords

Here you can see the new unit wired up and the end of the old unit. Note the same connections

Voila!!!, new lamp with map reading lights. Shame it shows how dirty the rest of the plastic in my car is

Adding Heated Windscreen Washer Jets

Easy
Required Tools: Soldering iron, Wire, Volt meter
Time Required:  1 hour
Cost: £12.70(part number 6747267 X 2, £6.35 each from Ford)

Another very easy Mod, although you will need to do some wiring. If you mix your windscreen wash fluid correctly it shouldn't freeze until about -15 degrees, but often you will find that its squirts for a while and then stops. This is normally because it freezes as it leaves the squirter jets. The solution is to replace yours with heated units off of a car that has them or buy them from ford.

Fitting them on the car is easy, just disconnect the old jets and push them out, then push in the new jets. Plug the water hose back on and your back to where you started. The next bit is the fun bit.

Now My car didn't have any wiring for these so I had to do it myself. I cut off the plug at the bottom of each squirter and  made up my old loom. A wired (Soldered) a wire from a good earth (Bonnet earth strap) to the first wire, then wired the remaining squirter wire to one of the wires on the next unit, and finally wired the remaining wire to a 12V positive supply controlled by the rear heater relay, so the squirter heaters are on only when the rear window/mirror heater circuits are on. I have seen that pre-fitted Mondy's the supply to the Squirters is a ignition fed 12V. ie they are on all the time, they only get warm and not hot so this is  fine

Here is a simplified diagram of the wiring

Pictures will be coming soon of the actual installation.

PS if you want pukka connectors to match those on the squirters then next time you change brake pads just cut on the connectors on the pads, they're a perfect match (provided you have brake wear sensors)

Rear Courtesy Lamp

Easy
Required Tools: Soldering iron, Wire, Volt meter
Time Required:  1 hour
Cost: £6.75 (part number 6111755  from Ford)

First buy the part

Or scrounge one from a scrap Mondeo Ghia or a Mondeo or Granada's main light

Pop, the two plastic lugs at the back of the roof lining by the rear window. Pull out the cover and its stem goes through the centre of the actual grommet to wedge it. Remove the grommet as well. Now you can look under the headlining and see where the metal hole for the lamp is (Sorry about the blurry picture)

Now press up on the roof lining to find where the hole is and cut the lining to match the hole. I used a Swiss Army knife. Dont push too hard or you'll have a hole in the roof. A large pin car help to locate the hole, but I could feel it through the lining

My hole. You can clearly see the metal lamp holder and its hole. Don't worry about the finish as the lamp covers this

Now tape 3  wires (5 amp rating) together to form a loom about 2m long. Here is the cheats method. Now pull out the rubber strip around the base of the sun roof that holds the liner around the sunroof. Now the liner flops down a bit to give you access. Make sure one wire (to be the earth) is distinguishable from the other two

Poke the wire up through the lamp hole and down out through the round hole beside it. Now push it forwards between the liner and metal sunroof panel until it comes out at the sun roof.

Now stick it in the other side of the sunroof and down to the hole where the front lamp is (You've have taken this out havn't you). Tuck the wire up and around the sun roof, leaving the ends sticking out by each lamp, tidy up and replace the rubber strip

In my case I used a twin core for the 2 live feeds and a third black wire for the earth. Here you can see them hanging down alongside my front light. I soldered them into the backs of the 3 connectors so the lamp still is removable (The white wire is for the Radio's alarm sensor). Stick the front light back in

Now go to the back lamp and solder the two live feeds to the two tabs on the left here and the earth wire onto the tab by the bulb. If you want to be really good then use proper connectors

Pop the lamp back in the hole and Viola!! a rear courtesy lamp
