UK Recalls

This page hope to highlight the official Ford recalls that I know of. Check to see if your car has a potentially serious fault. In the US the Contour has been recalled much more often. I plan to try and get a list of all the US recalls in the future.

Possibility of static sparking during refuelling

Possible failure of offside front brake calliper

ABS braking

Possibility of chafing damage to front seat belt webbing

Door latch concern

Brake fluid may leak from pressure limiting valve

Model: Mondeo vehicles fitted with a petrol engine

Concern: Possibility of static sparking during refuelling

Description of defect: It is possible that a static electric spark from the metal shield surrounding the fuel filler pipe may be generated during refuelling.

Remedial action: Recall the affected vehicles for the fitment of an earth lead between the fuel filler pipe and the vehicle body.

Vehicle identification numbers: RP, RB, RR

VI reference: R1995/011

Recall launch date: March 31, 1995

Build dates: August 1994 to October 28, 1994

Numbers involved: 15755

Model: Mondeo (All models except V6 engine variants)

Concern: Possible failure of offside front brake caliper

Description of defect: It is possible that some Mondeo vehicles may have been fitted with a right hand front brake caliper where the casting is not to specification. In time this may result in fluid leakage with the loss of one brake circuit.

Remedial action: Recall the affected vehicles for a check on the manufacturing date of the subject caliper. Caliper units falling within the affected range will be replaced.

Vehicle identification numbers: SU

VI reference: R1996/040

Recall launch date: March 15, 1996

Build dates: October 10, 1995 to October 12, 1995 (Genk Plant)

Numbers involved: 1812

Model: Mondeo (V6 vehicles fitted with ABS/TCS)

Concern: ABS braking

Description of defect: An electrostatic discharge may cause the anti-lock braking system to shut down. The ABS warning lamp will not indicate this condition to the driver, and could result in a wheel lock-up situation under extreme braking conditions.

Remedial action: Recall all affected vehicles, renew the anti-lock brake control unit and fit and earthing strap.

Vehicle identification numbers: WL

VI reference: R1998/33

Recall launch date: April 17, 1998

Build dates: December 1, 1997 to January 30, 1998

Numbers involved: 889

Model: Mondeo

Concern: Possibility of chafing damage to front seat belt webbing

Description of defect: It is possible that on some Mondeo vehicles the lower part of the front seat belts may contact the edge of the backrest recliner mechanism housing behind the seat valance. Repeated contact of this nature may eventually cause damage to the seat belt webbing. This concern does not affect seats with 6 way power adjust, as these have a unique recliner mechanism and housing.

Remedial action: Recall affected vehicles, inspect seat belts, renew any damaged seat belts and fit protective shields to all seats.

Vehicle identification numbers: SY, SS, ST, SJ, SU, SM, SP, TB, TR, TA, TG, TC, TK, TD, TE, TL, TY, TS, TT, VJVU, VM, VP, VB, VR, VA & VG

VI reference: R1999/005

Recall launch date: February 23, 1999

Build dates: June 5, 1995 to September 24, 1997

Numbers involved: 229846

Model: Ford Mondeo & Cougar

Concern: Door latch concern

Description of defect: Some vehicles have been built with door latches which may not be to specification. An internal plastic pawl within the assembly may seize which results in the latch failing to function as designed, preventing the door being securely shut.

Remedial action: Recall affected vehicles and fit quality assured replacement door latches.

Vehicle identification numbers: WB, WR & WA

VI reference: R1999/084

Recall launch date: October 7, 1999

Build dates: 3 Sep 98 to 18 Nov 98 (depending on production plant)

Numbers involved: 32,235

Model: Mondeo (without ABS)

Concern: Brake fluid may leak from pressure limiting valve

Description of defect: Corrosion of the rear brake pressure limiting valve may allow brake fluid to leak from a joint

Remedial action: Recall affected vehicles and replace pressure limiting valve

Vehicle identification numbers: Various

VI reference: R2000/042

Recall launch date: April 13, 2000

Build dates: January 2, 1996 to August 7, 1998
