At 80k miles my Cat split open and looking at the insides it was obvious it was really dead. Also looking at the rest of the exhaust showed that although it had no rust on the boxes, a lot of them were really dented and the tail pipe was rusting away. Good excuse for a new one. Looking at the Scorpions, Zetus, Jetex etc, one thing was very obvious, they were all boy racer pipes, designed for noise and not performance.
Then I came across Powerflow who custom make a stainless steel
system to your specks on the car. The agents closest to me were RSR Tyres and
wheels in Croydon, so off the Molemobile went for a new cat and an new exhaust
Firstly the fitter spent nearly an hour with me making sure that he knew what to build. I wanted performance, but not noise and more ground clearance. We debated about going for twin exits, but in the end I decided to go single. I also choose a square exit tube from the 20 or so on offer. I went for 3" tubing throughout
When I returned about 6 hours later the work looked amazing, a nice very large bore shiny pipe stuck out from the back. Noise on idle was only slightly deeper than before and when revved it gave a nice burble turning to a rasp only at very high revs (its since bedded in and sound very good at speed). They had also fitted 2 extra mounts to the underside of the car to hold the pipe as close to the body as possible
The difference was noticeable immediately. On pulling away from the garage I must have grinned from ear to ear. Much cleaner pull completely across the range so it obviously increased torque and later test suggested an extra 5 HP, so yes the Mondeo standard exhaust is very restrictive.
Go and get one fitted, you wont regret it. Cost for full cat back system was £250 which compares very well with a Ford system
