notes for George Cobley :-
"My great-grandmother had referred to him dying in the war, although other members of the family had said that he died in Canada. She had a photograph of him wearing a services uniform, the whereabouts of which are a mystery.
I found his details on a website for the Canadian Army
http.data2.archives.ca
It turns out that he had immigrated to Canada and joined the Canadian Army. He joined the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on 27 January 1916 (Private 502506). By this time he had married a lady called Carrie and was living at 42 River Street, Toronto. The website gives a scan of his actual attestation paper which was filled in when he joined. It states that he was a blacksmith (like his father), had previously served in the military (something called the 2nd P.C.C.E. ??). He was 5 feet 7 & a quarter inches tall, had a girth of 37 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair. He had a mole on his right shoulder, and a scar on his right leg."
