XVII Olympic Games Rome 1960
Don Cobley, one of the countys greatest all-round athletes, won an Olympic
event but it did not qualify him for a gold medal. The official report, by
Lt.Col. O.G.W.White DSO, manager of Great Britains Modern Pentathlon team
in 1956 is quoted For the cross-country running we returned to the grounds
of Oaklands Hunt Club where the winner was Sgt.D.Cobley of Britain in 13
minutes 35.5 seconds, a clear 13 seconds ahead of Haase of Sweden. This was
the fastest time for this event in an Olympic Games and was mainly
responsible for Britain gaining second place in the team reckoning.
