Notes for George (Garry) Cobley:
From Grandson Ken Cobley Byfield, Solicitor, 32 Gold Street, Tamworth.
"My grandfather was George Cobley (known as Garry). He was an "apothecary" and operated the dispensary for a Doctor (I think Dr.Blackman) at Maitland. Apparently in those days Doctors had their own Dispensaries. Subsequently Grandfather worked for chemists, Blackhall and Hunt in Hunter Street Newcastle, and worked there until retirement about 1930. He died just after retiring. George only had one son Harold, who retired from Department of Justice about 1950 - ( he had no children). George also had two daughters, one of whom was my mother"

Notes for George Cobley:
George Cobley was admitted to the Royal Academy Antique School on 21 December 1850. A letter from the Royal Academy of Arts 29 April 1981, stated on the students register, his age was 19, and his address was 68, George Street, Euston Square. He had evidently studied at "Leigh's School of Art" as he was recommended by "J.M.Leigh". He never exhibited at the Royal Academy and was not a member.
He arrived in Australia in 1854, and was at his marriage in 1855, a schoolteacher at Wellingrove, near Glen Innes. In 1858 - Artist at Dundee, where he left in 1859 and moved to Glen Innes, apparently to run the Union Jack Hotel, which was sold in 1869. On 21st November 1859, he purchased land - 2 roods, 32 perches for £5.12.0, in Glen Innes, and his wife Elizabeth also purchased 2 acres 2 roods and 21 perches in the village of Severn (known today as Dundee) for £7.18.0.
George was the Registrar of Births,Deaths, and Marriages at Wellingrove and Glen Innes from 1862 - 1867. He ran a store in Glen Innes up to 1869 and at the same time had an Auctioneer's Licence. He was also the poundkeeper. My Aunt Connie said that her g'father had impounded horses belonging to Captain Ward, who was known to be the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, and the horse he was riding to Wellingrove that threw him against a tree and ultimately 3 days later, caused his death, was one of Captain Ward's horses.
From "The Town and Country Journal", Feb 12th 1870. " Thursday noon. Mr.George Cobley, of this place, formerly of the Royal Academy of Painting, died last evening, after two day's suffering, the effects of a fall from his horse, will be buried today. He was a man of honour - a Peabody minus his wealth"
He was buried in the Church of England portion of the Glen Innes cemetery in a large plot with room for his wife.
There is a headstone in the plot - the inscription reads:
"Sacred to the Memory of
George Cobley
Died February 9th 1870
aged 38 years
I have redeemed thee,
thou art mine"
This same inscription is on the headstone of his parents grave in St.Mary's Churchyard, Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire, England. Elizabeth Cobley was buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, NSW, Australia.
