notes for John Cobley :-
At the time of discharge from the Army as medically unfit for further service, at the age of 40yrs and 9mths, John Cobley's description was 5'6" in height, brown hair, grey eyes with fair complexion. By trade a labourer.
He served three months in the Peninsula, one year in America, three years and three months in France, seven years and nine months in the West Indies and two years and seven months in the East Indies. The remainder of his service at home. He was wounded before Bayonne. His medical history at discharge was -" He has served in the East and West Indies and has suffered from Fever,Dysentry, and Pulmonary Affections, together with Rheumatism the effects of which on his constitution have rendered him in my opinion unfit for the Service. Signed J Macdiarmid Asst Surgeon.Fort Pitt 17 July 1838"
From the proceedings of the Regimental Board at Chatham Barracks on 21 July 1838
it was stated that No72 Sgt Major John Cobley was :-
Born:In the Parish of Pensford, in or near the town of Pensford in the County of Somerset, by trade a labourer.
Attested: for the Ninth Regt., of Foot at Dublin, Co. Dublin on the 9th December 1813 at the age of 17 years.
Service: which he is entitled to reckon after making every deduction required by Her Majesty's Regulations up to the 21st July 1838 is 28 years and three hundred and five days -- the details of which as extracted from the regimental documents are stated"

Conduct and Character: The Officers composing the board examined the Defaulter's book and received parole testimony from Captain Forbes 55th Regt Commanding the 9th Depot are of the opinion that his character has been that of a good and faithful soldier and that he has never been convicted by a Court Martial.
Pay and Clothing: No72 Sgt Major John Cobley being asked up to what period he has been paid, answered, that his Account was balanced up to the end of the 21 of the present Month, being further asked whether he has any other claim on the Regiment, for Arrears of Pay, Allowances, or Clothing, answered, that he has no unsatisfied claims whatsoever.
On his discharge from the Army he settled in Charlton Kings and was a grocer in the 1841 census giving his age as 40, his wife Mary Ann 40, with Edwin 11, George 10, John 7,Roseabella 2 and Adolphus 6mths. In Piggots Directory of 1844 he was still listed as a Shopkeeper. Also listed in a Directory as a Fencing Master. His son Edwin a music teacher.
