note:
extracted from an e-mail by his grand daughter
He was a Railwayman for many years. Family history has it that he arrived in Water Orton (the village where my Grandmother lived) one afternoon playing trumpet in a brass band, and my Grandmother fell in love with the handsome trumpet player. I have since discovered that the talent for trumpet playing runs in families, and that it's not a random thing at all....
Anyway, to get back to Grandad. He was a keen cricketer all his life, and when he stopped playing cricket, he started umpiring, and that is still the first picture that comes to my mind when I think of him. He also kept the grounds for Water Orton Cricket Club for many years and was made an Honourary Member of the Club. I think that all my Cobley uncles played cricket for Water Orton, and so did my Father. Cricket is one thing I still miss....
He was a keen sportsman, and not only kept a pair of ice skates at home, but could also use them ... not a common thing during that time frame I don't think. My mother always remembered how he would get them out whenever the canal or pond froze, much to the rest of the village's amazement.
