Prepositions in German

This sheet gives you some of the most commonly used prepositions in German and tells you which case they govern. It is very important to make sure that when a preposition is used, the correct case follows.

The accusative case :

bis	- until
durch	- through
entlang	- along
für	- for
gegen	- against
ohne	- without
um	- at, around
wider	- against

The genetive case :

(an)statt	- instead of
außerhalb	- outside of
in der Nähe	- near
nördlich	- north of
östlich	- east of
südlich	- south of
trotz	- despite
während	- during
wegen	- because of
westlich	- west of

The dative case :

aus	- out (of)
außer	- except
bei	- at, (beside)
gegenüber	- opposite
mit	- with
nach	- after, to
seit	- since, for
von	- from, by
zu	- at

The accusative/dative case :

an	- at, to
auf	- on
hinter	- behind
in	- in, (into)
neben	- beside
über	- above, over
unter	- under
vor	- before
zwischen	- between

This last group takes either the accusative case OR the dative case depending on the context.
