Hubert Sumlin |
|
| Hubert
Sumlin was one of thirteen children born on a farm near Greenwood,
Mississippi on November 16, 1931. He learned to play drums and guitar as
a small child and was playing at parties and local jukes by the time he
was twelve years old.
Sumlin left home at seventeen to
tour clubs and taverns throughout the South with his childhood friend
James Cotton. The Jimmy Cotton band played 1950-1953 and recorded for
the Sun label in Memphis. In 1954, Sumlin joined the Howlin' Wolf band
and moved to Chicago. It was Howlin' Wolf who mentored the young Sumlin,
prodding and encouraging him to find his own style and develop as a
performer. "I was a very fortunate man to have somebody like Wolf
on my side," says Sumlin. "I played with the guy for 25 years,
man! You learn a lot. He wouldn't go no place unless I went with him. He
pushed me as far as he could push me, and I could still enjoy doing the
thing I love -- playing guitar. Guitar is my thing."
Sumlin's warped style of blues,
which has been called "wicked" and "bent", went on
to influence everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Frank Zappa. The raw tone in
his guitar bites
Hubert Sumlin's return to the
recording studio is very special because it includes a reunion with his
old friend James Cotton. Heart & Soul is a tribute to the
many influences and inspirations that make Hubert Sumlin one of the
premier blues artists of his time
