Letterbox

Please be aware that :-

  • most of Dartmoor is privately owned.
  • your rights on common land are to walk and ride.
  • these rights and privileges must not be abused by innocent damage.
  • Show your appreciation of the Dartmoor National Park and its landowners by adhering to:-

  • the Letterbox Owner's Code.
  • the Letterbox Hunter's Code.
  • the Country Code.
  • Above all please educate others in this practice.

    THE LETTERBOX OWNER'S CODE

    Boxes should not be sited:-

    1.On land to which the public does not have access.
    2.In any kind of antiquity, in or near stone rows or circles, cists or cairns, nor any kind of building, walls or ruins, peat cutters' or tinners' huts etc.
    3.In any potentially dangerous situation, where injuries could be caused.
    4.As a fixture. Cement or any other building material is not to be used.
    5.Other than in an existing natural hole or cavity, so that there is no disturbance of rocks or vegetation - bylaws prohibit the cutting of turf.
    6.Close to each other : over-intensive use of an area risks damage to the moorland surface.
    7.Without a contact phone number / address in the visitor's book to ensure that information pertaining to the box can be passed to the owner immediately.

    THE LETTERBOX HUNTER'S CODE

    1.When searching for boxes, do not disturb any antiquities such as stone rows, circles, cists or cairns, nor any buildings, walls or ruins, peat cutters' or tinners' huts etc.
    2.It should never be necessary to remove natural vegetation or rocks to find a box.
    3.Replace the box carefully and leave it as you would hope to find it.
    4.Leave the site better than you find it; you are encouraged to take away any litter left by people who care for the moor less than you do.
    5.Dogs must be kept under proper control at all times to prevent the worrying of sheep. Byelaws - a ranger can require a dog to be put on a lead and dog owners can be fined up to £400.
    6.Follow the Country Code.

    THE COUNTRY CODE

    1.Guard against all risks of fire.
    2.Fasten all gates.
    3.Keep your dog under proper control.
    4.Keep to the paths across farmland.
    5.Avoid damaging fences, hedges, and walls.
    6.Leave no litter.
    7.Safeguard water supplies.
    8.Protect wildlife, wild plants and trees.
    9.Go carefully on country roads.
    10.Respect the life of the countryside.
