Gwenvor

Summary:

This is the most consistent break in Cornwall. If it is flat here then it is flat every where else.

Location:

10 miles SW of Penzance and 2 miles north of Lands End on the Atlantic coast. Located at the North end of Whitesand Bay and Sennen Cove.

From Penzance take the A30 signed towards Lands End. About 2 miles before Lands End you will find the right turn just before a chapel and before you enter the outskirts of Sennen. Go down this lane bearing right at all junctions and you will eventually come to a small car park on the cliffs above the break. Alternatively you can reach the break by walking round from Sennen Cove

Name of Break:

Gwenvor.

Direction Of Break:

W.

Best wind direction is SE round to NE which is offshore.

Comments:

This is a very consistent break picking up virtually all the swell coming from the Atlantic no matter how small. Be warned that it is a long walk down the steep cliffs to reach the break and an even tougher walk back up after a session.

The break works at all states of the tide but tends to be better towards low tide. The sand bars move around a lot but the best peaks are off the rocks at the Northern end of the beach and sometimes in the center of the beach. It is possible to get very long rides form the peaks in the center.

In conclusion an excellent break and well worth the walk down the steep cliffs.

Sennen Cove

Summary:

This is one of the best and most beautiful beaches in Cornwall and probably the UK.

Location:

10 miles SW of Penzance and 1 mile north of Lands End on the Atlantic coast.

From Penzance take the A30 signed towards Lands End. About 1 mile before Lands End you will find the right turn signed to Sennen Cove. Go down the steep hill to the village and you will find a car park on the right over looking the beach.

Name of Break:

Sennen Cove.

Direction Of Break:

W.

Best wind direction is SSE round to NE which is offshore.

Comments:

This is a beautiful beach with clean sand, clear water and good waves. An added bonus is that it doesn't get too crowded due to the limited parking available.

The break works best from half tide down to low tide and back again to half tide. At high tide the sand beach is too steep with the waves dumping straight on to the beach. The sand bars move around a lot so from one year to the next the best peaks will vary. However, I have found the best breaks to be in the center of the beach and towards the northern end.

From the car park you can just see the waves breaking at Gwenvor at the far North end of the bay. It is possible to walk round from Sennen to get to Gwenvor.

In conclusion this is a great break and one of my favourites. The wave quality is good for a beach break and is combined with clear water.
