2005 - Make Poverty History

Some Ghanaian rice and tomato farmers who can no longer live off their land are forced to find work in the stone quarries, breaking large rocks into stones for road construction. Hundreds of men and women work like this for 12 hours a day in sweltering heat, earning barely £1 a day.

During 2005, Christian Aid is joining Comic Relief, Oxfam, CAFOD, churches trade unions, and a host of celebrities and other organisations in what could become the most powerful campaign ever against world poverty. Why 2005? Because the UK will be playing a unique role as they host the G8 summit of world leaders in July and will also hold the presidency of the European Union from July to December. It is a great opportunity for the government to challenge unjust trade rules and practices, to cancel poor countries debts and to deliver more aid.  To see what these injustices are and what they mean in practical terms, go here.

"2005 is a year of great opportunity. If everyone who wants to see an end to poverty, hunger, and suffering speaks out, then the noise will be deafening. Politicians will have to listen."  Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

"Christians have a duty to defend the helpless and cry out against injustice."  said World Visions Director of Advocacy and Communications, Rudo Kwaramba. Around 1.2 billion people live on less than 60p a day and every day 30,000 people die because of poverty. This is totally unacceptable and it's time that we stood united to call for a change.

The Christian voice will be heard strongly across the country in a series of high profile events involving church representatives from up and down the country, and will be announced in 'Crosstalk' as they occur.  If you want to know how you can get involved complete the supporters form which is at the back of church and we will post them to Christian Aid, or contact Christian Aid, www.christianaid.org.uk
