An Introduction to the Mothers’ Union

The Mother’s Union (the M.U.) was founded in 1876 by Mary Summer in Arlesford, Hampshire.  She was a Rector's wife who saw the enormous responsibility of motherhood, and started a group where all classes could unite in faith, prayer, and fellowship.  The head office is now in Mary Sumner House, Westminster.

The M.U. now has a million members in 65 countries.  Through practical action and prayer, it has a global voice in its outreach and influences action on family debt and welfare.  The M.U. has projects in prison, in contact centres, hospitals, refugee camps and in fact wherever there is a need.  Each year we have a Women's World Day of Prayer (United Women World-wide) also a Women's Day of Prayer

At our meetings we have a collection box for overseas work and a Canterbury, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and York Box and there are fund raising events during the year by the Diocese for Overseas work.

The Aims, and Objectives of the M.U.

A member joining the M.U. promises to:

1)  Uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider, understanding.

2)  To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the church.

3)  To maintain World-wide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.

4)  To produce conditions in society favourable to stable family life, and the protection of children.

5)  To help those whose family life has met with adversity.

Our Branch

Our M.U. Branch meets on the first Thursday in the month, at 2.15 p.m. in St Chad's Church Hall, Roslin Road, Irby.

Our current membership is 52, which includes two Indoor Prayer Members (who are unable to attend our meetings).

Our Branch Leader is Mrs Susan Burns.  Our Branch members are involved in many aspects of Church life and in the community, including Young People, the P.C.C., the Choir, the Praise and Play Group, the Mothers and Toddlers Group, Christmas and Summer Fairs, the Bible Society, the Alpha Group, hospital visiting, charity and fund raising, the RNLI, the Gardening Club and the W.I.

There is an annual subscription of £12.00 for each member and 50p each meeting for tea and biscuits.  The majority of our subscriptions pay for the work of the M.U. and is sent to our Headquarters in London.

We welcome new members and visitors.  Do come along and join us.  Friends, husbands and partners are welcome to come on our outings and excursions.

We celebrated our 75th Anniversary of the St Chad's and St Bartholomew's Branch on the 5th June 2003.
