The Ismay Family Tomb

The tomb, standing between the old church tower and the new church.

The panel on the side of the tomb reads:

Sacred to the memory of Thomas Henry Ismay who died fully trusting in God's mercy on November 23rd 1899 in the 63rd year of his age: Great thoughts great feelings came to him like instincts unawares*.  Also of his wife Margaret Ismay who passed away in the same trust on April 9th 1907 in the 70th year of her age.  Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.**

* The quotation is from 'The Men of Old' by Richard Monckton Milnes, Lord Houghton, English statesman and writer (1809 - 1885).

** From the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:8.

The panel on the base reads:

In loving memory of Margaret Alice born March 22nd 1869 died August 18th 1901.  Wife of James Ismay.  Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.***

*** Matthew 25:45
