Load of old Boules?  Given certain members' penchant for expressing their opinions (sometimes robustly), I am sure they will welcome the new on-line forum at www.talkingboules.co.uk set up as a place "for people to visit and share their views and opinions; a central community for players who wish to discuss our sport".

Winter Competitions.  Latest results and draws for singles and doubles are here.

Regional Qualifiers and Brean Sands (16/01/05)

Now we have the 2005 calendar, the dates for the four Kent Regional Qualifiers has been set as has the InterRegional Championships at Brean Sands.  The Qualifiers are as follows:
1) Sunday 12 June - Plough & Chequers
2) Sunday 19 June - Lordswood
3) Sunday 3 July - Hartley
4) Sunday 17 July - Plough & Chequers
At least the weather for the Qualifiers should be a bit better than last year but with the InterRegional Championships on Saturday 17 & Sunday 18 September at Brean Sands it is unlikely that weekend will be as wonderful as last year.  Full 2005 Calendar here.

Kent Championships (16/01/05)

- Friday 3 June - Kent Singles Championship - George, Meopham
- Sunday 2 October - Kent Doubles Championship - Tovil
- Sunday 16 October - Kent Mixed Doubles Championship - Hartley
Let's try to win some more regional titles in 2005.

AGM News (14/01/05)

Membership subscription for 2005 will remain £2.00.  In addition there will be a cost of £15.00 per member who wishes to register with the English Petanque Association (of which £2.50 goes to the British Petanque Federation, £7.50 to the EPA and £5.00 to the Kent Petanque Association).  Match subs will be £3.00 only, home and away, with no additional charges for non-drivers.

There were 68 members in 2004 (61 BPA registered, 1 Junior BPA, 6 playing members).  So far the 2005 registration looks like being similar.  A vote was take on whether to have 6 or 7 teams in 2005.  On the present level of interest it was decided to have 6 teams (2 of 9 players, 3 of 10 players and 1 of 11 players).  However, this may change if more people sign up.

Towerlands cancelled (10/01/05)

The largest competition in the country, usually the season's big opener, Towerlands at Braintree, has been cancelled for 2005 because the new owners of the venue are demanding an uneconomical amount to hire it.

Bracklesham Bay 2005 (08/01/05)

44 people have signed up for the summer season's traditional opener at Bracklesham Bay in March 2005.

World Championship Quiz Night (28/11/04)

On 25 November Jean-Louis Guiot entertained us with a video of the World Championships in Grenoble from earlier this year.  With commentary from Colin Senneck, the evening saw some wonderful exhibitions of Gallic skill (and some excellent petanque on TV as well).  After a buffet sufficient for the whole petanque section (and next of kin) our token Frenchman proved how incredibly superior he and his fellow Grenouilles are by running a petanque quiz which was won by Colin Senneck (17 points), thus proving the expenditure on those World Championship tickets was worthwhile (or that he is good a copying Ron's answers).  Pat Allen proved that blondes have a place in petanque too by coming last (2 points) and Luke Fribbens is still living down the embarrassment of getting that question wrong. (Martyn Fribbens)

Hartley Open Mixed Doubles (28/11/04)

A classic late autumn day saw 19 teams turn out for the Hartley Open Mixed Doubles on Sunday 28 November.  By the cold finale the winning team was the Hartley team of Burnt Sausages (Ron & Mags Yates) who took home a warming £70.  Runners up with a less than chilly £40 were the Misfits (Rashid from Croydon and Pat Allen of Hartley).  Losing Semi finalists (who got some beer money) were the Rushabouts (Alan Rush and Gill Pearson) and George & Dragon (Colin Senneck & Jean Olley).  The Plate winners (who also got their bus fare home) were Hartley Swan (Mick & Joyce Nash) and the runners up were Hartley KC (Ken Flowerday & Chris Lizius).

Club Triples Final (03/10/04)

The new format for finals day, with just the Triples being played, was deemed a success.
39 entered and all the names went in the hat. Thankfully the rain held off, apart from one really wet hour. After the morning leagues a "snake" was played with the winners being Irene Gibbs, Ken Potter and Diane Bryant. Second place went to Linda Bradley, Val Rossall and John Fowers. The plate final was won 13-12 by Angela Hibble, Geoff Fuller and Babs Carr versus Dick Deamer, Rae Wall and Colin Senneck.

Club Singles (10/10/04)

The 2004 Summer Singles Final will be between Peter Bryant and Rae Wall.  Peter beat Geoff Fuller and Rae beat Colin Senneck in the semi finals.
The 2004 Summer Singles Plate will be between Anne Senneck and Diane Bryant.  Anne beat John Reynolds and Diane beat Dennis Peareth in the semi finals.

French victory in World Championships (28/09/04)

France 1 recorded a victory over Belgium 15-3 in the final of the World Championships in Grenoble at the weekend.  Jean-Louis has videoed the final and is planning to arrange a quiz evening and viewing in the near future.  Colin and Anne Senneck were there and have photos and stories to tell if asked. Information can be found here although the results are best viewed here.

28th Seal Courage Cup (the oldest triples Competition in the UK) (27/8/04)

Jean Louis Guiot was our only representative at the once-popular Seal Courage Cup triples (gone are the days when Hartley dominated with 6+ teams).  Jean-Louis teamed up with Keith Atkinson and Jennifer Cooter from GRFC.  They lost in the plate final to Plough and Chequers 1. (Jean-Louis Guiot)

National League Success for Hartley (19/09/04)

The third and final round of matches in the National League at Loughton on 19 September saw Hartley drawing 4-4 with Ventnor (Isle of Wight) and beating the Prince of Wales (also from the Isle of Wight) by 7 games to 1.  Overall we came 2nd in the second division, with Ventnor winning the  division. Not only does this mean that Hartley are promoted to Division 1 for next year but also that Hartley will go forward to a knockout early next year with Ventnor and the top six teams from the first division to play off for the honour of representing Great Britain at the European Club Championships.   Full results here.. The team was Mick (Captain) & Joyce Nash, Colin & Irene Gibbs, Peter & Diane Bryant and Colin Senneck (picture). (Mick Nash)

European Juniors (13/9/04)

Luke Fribbens was part of the Junior GB team that reached the semi finals of the Nations Cup at the European Junior championships in Luxembourg on the weekend of 11/12 September.  19 teams from 18 countries took part with France beating Spain in a heated final for the overall championship.  Luke feels GB could have done better and perhaps won the Nations Cup which is the Consolage event.

Success for the South East (and Hartley) at Brean (6/9/04)

The South East teams won the Division 1 title, the Challenge title and the Junior title in blistering temperatures at the Inter-Regional Championships at Brean on the weekend of 4/5 September 2004.
Hartley members Jean-Louis Guiot, Martyn Fribbens and Luke Fribbens were part of the successful South East Squad.

Luke won the Junior triples title with team members Jennifer Cooter (GRFC), Greg Davenport (Plough & Chequers) and Kris Smith (Plough & Chequers).   Luke has now taken every National Junior title this year. The Juniors were also part of the overall Division 1 team that became the first region to win three titles in a row.
Jean-Louis
& Martyn, with team member Nigel Mansell (Fighting Cocks), performed the remarkable feat of winning 10 games out of 10 to help the South East Challenge squad win the Challenge Trophy.  After the end of the last game Martyn was shaking so much with adrenalin that he couldn’t sign the score sheet! (photos).  Full results at the BPA site and SE details here.
