Shetland music fans are in for
a treat next month when one of the most exciting new tribute bands in the
country head north for 2 gigs in Lerwick.
The Antarctic Monkeys bring their Arctic Monkeys tribute show to the North Star
on Friday 1st September and Saturday 2nd September, the Friday gig will be
alcohol-free and open to over 14’s.
All 4 members of the Antarctic Monkeys have been playing together for over 3
years, forming their own band the Ryde in 2003 and playing gigs in their native
Wolverhampton.
'We have a band of our own called the Ryde,' says the Antarctics' Ian Fletcher.
'But we couldn't get gigs. And when we did, they always said: ''Do you do
covers?'' We were sitting around thinking about how we could get out there and
play, and someone said: ''Why don't we do a Monkeys tribute?'' We all love their
music, so we did.'
After two weeks' close study of the Monkeys' debut album - Whatever People Say I
Am, That's What I'm Not - Fletcher and his friends had perfected the sound to
the point where only the most highly trained ears could spot the
difference.
Their decision to form the Antarctic Monkeys appears to have been a successful
move for the band as demand for the group has been astronomical since it’s
conception less than a year ago.
Support for both nights comes from Shetland’s own Juvenile Delinquents and
Hidden Agenda.
Tickets for Friday nights gig , which starts at 7.30pm, are available from High
Level Music.
Tickets for Saturday’s gig, which is over 18’s only, are available from
Mooney’s Wake.
There is an arcticle on the Antarctic Monkeys and various other tribute bands in
the latest Sunday Telegraph, the link is below:

Next Saturday night the North Star plays host to one of the most popular trance / hard house DJ's in the UK at the moment.
Nick Rafferty has gained a superb reputation amongst dance fans for his banging sets, most notably at the Sundissential club where he is the resident DJ.
Nick began his Djing career in 1995 in and around his native Birmingham, Nick rapidly gained an impressive reputation around the west midlands. When the now legendary Sundissential club night started it was only natural that Nick should become the club's second resident DJ alongside the great Tony De Vit. Playing with Tony and the other Sundissential 'big names' taught Nick a tremendous amount about the skills of a top DJ. Right now he refuses to stay stagnant and become pigeon holed. He's always looking to push new styles and sounds in both his production & DJ'ing. This has enabled him to develop his own style to the point that he is in demand across the whole country and the globe.
Beyond his DJ'ing career Nick has had considerable success with various studio projects including 25 single releases under his own name. He's also released under the name NR?, completed an impressive array of remixes, as well as taking control of the decks for eight TV advertised compilations including all 3 Sundissential Albums.

Edinburgh based live band the Pagans

Following the success of Mani's DJ set
at the North Star last year, another
Manchester bass playing hero takes to the decks on Saturday 3rd September.
Peter Hook has had success playing bass with not one, but three different
bands during his 28 year musical career.
Hooky founded Joy Division in 1977 along with Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner and
Steven Morris. Starting off as a run of the mill punk band, Joy Division
soon forged their own sound and emerged as one of the god-fathers of the new
wave scene, influencing bands such as U2 and Echo & the Bunnymen along the
way. After 2 albums and a hit single with Love Will Tear Us Apart the band
came to an untimely end with the tragic suicide of lead singer, Ian Curtis.
Hook along with the other 2 remaining members regrouped and formed New
Order, who remarkably went on to achieve even greater success than Joy
Division. Hook is probably best known for his thundering bass riff to their
1983 hit, Blue Monday which is also the biggest selling 12" of all time and
still a dance floor filler to this day.
Other notable tracks by New Order include True Faith, Regret and their
number 1 single with the 1990 England world cup football squad, World In
Motion.
During New Order's 5 year sabbatical in the 90's, Hook went on to form
Monaco which also gave him a top 10 hit with What Do You Want From Me? in
1998.
2005 has been another busy year for Hook with the release of New Order's 8th
studio album Waiting For The Sirens Call and headline slots at just about
every major festival in Europe and North America including both Glastonbury
and T in the Park. His hectic schedule continues with an American DJ tour
after the Shetland gig.
Support on the night comes from local rockers Rip Torn, and like the Mani
and Rick Witter gigs, the band will be learning a couple of Joy Division
numbers with the hope that Hooky will join them on bass.
Tickets are on sale now at Mooney's Wake priced at £10

will see singer Stuart Collier obliterate dozens more in celebration of the
life of the king of grunge.
Teen Spirit are constantly in demand over the UK, Europe and Australia

One of the most influential and
acclaimed dance sounds systems to come out
of Scotland over the past decade arrive in Shetland next month for a gig at
the North Star.
Mish Mash who are a 3 piece dance collective featuring decks, live
percussion and an MC will make their first appearance in the isles on
Saturday 9th July. This will signal the beginning of a hectic week for
Shetland's leading music venue with big name acts playing on an almost
nightly basis in the North Star throughout the week of the Island Games.
Mish Mash were formed by DJ/Producer Oscar Fullone in the mid nineties.
Oscar had been Djing around Glasgow for many years before and was
responsible for the seminal Subculture nights in the city's trendy Subclub.
Oscar was keen to explore a more diverse musical path, and so with the help
of percussionist Devin Stewart and MC Nordin Zaoui, Mish Mash were born.
MC Nordin is no stranger to Shetland having been raised in Whiteness and
spending his youth in Scalloway where his father ran his business'
In the beginning Mish Mash were trading from Glasgow's Riverside club. The
Mish Mash nights proved to be a tremendous success for the club, and in 2001
it was voted best club night in Glasgow.
It wasn't long before Mish Mash had outgrown the Riverside club and a move
was made across town to the Arches for Mish Mash to carry on their
blossoming brand of dance music. In recent years Mish Mash have found
themselves playing on a regular basis in the Cargo club in London.
The reason for the success of Mish Mash can be put down to their eclectic
music policy, from ragga to deep house via percussive latin tracks, inject
some dancehall jazz, hip hop, funk and soul and you have a musical formula
so unique, inventive and diverse that no cliché can do it justice.
Tickets are on sale now for the Mish Mash experience priced £10 from
Mooney's Wake.

Saturday 21st May sees the arrival of 5-piece female led rock/pop band Wire Daisies in Shetland, to play a show at the North Star.
Wire Daisies who hail from Cornwall
were formed in 2002 and are fronted by Treana Morris, whose haunting vocals are
reminiscent of forgotten 90's stars The Cranberries and current flavour of the month
Jem, while the full band sound was not that dissimilar to last years North Star visitors,
Speedway.
The band are looked after by former Queen manager Jim Beech and are signed to the
EMI subsidiary label Transisitor, which just happens to be run by Blur drummer Dave
Rowntree.
The Wire Daisies' performances at the international Montreux Jazz and Womad festivals
proved to be the bands highlights of 2004 and saw the band looking more than at home on
the large stage in front of sizeable audiences. Playing at the closing night of the
Montreux Festival on the same bill as Air, Jamie Cullum and Alicia Keys.
Earlier this year the band released their debut album "Just Another Day"
which has already proved a massive hit in cyber land by topping the iTunes charts in both
the UK and France.
The Shetland date is part of a Scottish tour that will see the group play King Tut's in Glasgow as well as Edinburgh's Cabaret Voltaire and Drummond's in Aberdeen. Alan McLeod from the North Star said he hoped that the Shetland audience would turn out to support this gig as the tour was being arranged by 13 Artists, one of the UK's largest agencies which also handles names like Bloc Party, Supergrass and Radiohead.

If you want to check out tracks and videos by Wire Daisies then look up their
website at www.wiredaisies.com
