| Rockpooling |
|
The
area in and around Staithes was recently voted
one of the top ten rockpooling locations in
the UK by Countryfile.com, the official website
to Countryfile magazine.
"The
coastline between Staithes and Port Mulgrave,
north-west of Whitby, is rich in ammonite and
belemnite fossils and the rockpools hide a bounty
that’s good enough to eat," they say. |

| Staithes History |
|
Staithes
is famous for many things, it's past fishing
industry has now sadly declined although one
or two boats can still be seen in the harbour
offloading their daily catch.
The
area also has a long association with mineral
production and was once a major export centre
for alum to be used as a fixative for dying
cotton. Indeed in the late 1700's and early
1800's alum was so valuable a commodity that
it was actually dearer than gold!
Staithes
was also the boyhood home of Captain James Cook
where he worked in a chandlers shop before embarking
on a distinguished naval career.
Many
artists are drawn to the area by it's outstanding
natural beauty and this led to the creation
of "The Staithes Group" of painters
whose works are now highly sought after. |

- Enjoy the North York Moors and Coast.

Now |
|
| Staithes
is a picturesque fishing village with its cobbled
streets, higgledy piggledy cottages and a maze
of alleyways. It has a natural harbour with
a small sandy beach and is surrounded by breathtaking
scenery. Staithes is also an ideal base for
walking fishing or exploring with Whitby 10m,
Scarborough 30m, York 48m and the beautiful
North Yorkshire National Park on the doorstep.
The Cleveland Way also passes through Staithes.
The area also forms part of "the Jurassic
Coast" and is very popular with fossil
hunters. Good examples of ammonites dating back
70-80 million years can be picked up from the
foreshore during an amble at low tide.
The village has most of the amenities you could
require with a selection of shops, cafes, bistros
and pubs. |
