Denmark

In the early 1960's the Danish State Railway Company, Danske Statsbaaner (DSB), ordered some high speed trains from MAN in Germany, which were similar to the German VT11 (Later 601/602) "Trans Europe Express" units produced by Linke-Hoffman/MAN/Wegmann from 1957. These trains were formed of one power vehicle at each end with up to six coaches between. Each power vehicle had a large bulbous nose which contained a single Maybach MD650 rated at 1100hp which in turn drove into a Mekydro K104 that translated the power to the leading bogie only. The units were capable of being split and were equipped with intermediate driving trailers for such a purpose, indeed in the majority of cases the "Lyntogs" were operated split. According to the Danish Railorama website, only one half set survives as part of the Danish Railway Museum fleet, the remainder having been sold to Poland for further service and scrapping around 1995.
