OΣE Class A401 - 1xMD870

In 1967, ΣEK (predecesor to OΣE) took delivery of the first of ten locomotives from Germany. The superstructure and bogies were built by Jung, the electric transmission was by Siemens and the engine fitted was the Maybach MD870, rated at 1980hp. The cabs bore a passing resemblance to the revised V160 design (later DB 216 etc) although the rest of the design was unique. The locomotives rode on two three axle bogies which were built to a non-equi spaced design, which was very unusual in European locomotive building practice at the time. The locomotives were withdrawn between 1986 & 1993. All ten are still visible on OSE, one at Larissa (A407), one at Aghios Ioannis Works (A410 without bogies) and the remaining eight at Archarne (above). All are in varying states of decay. For a bit more information, follow the link to the A401 pages of the "Thermally Stressed!" website.

In the mid 1960's ΣEK bought a number of Railcars from Ferrostal in Germany which were fitted with Maybach GTO6 V12 engines. The last of these finally stopped working around 1996 when it was operating out of Thessaloniki.
