MAK constructed 25 Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives for India in 1964-1965. They were constructed for 2ft 6inch (762mm) gauge operation. They were fitted with an MD435 rated at 700hp, driving a Voith transmission. The Indian Railways classed them as ZDM2. It is believed that several are still in service, although it is unknown whether they have been re-engined.
If anyone has any more information about the current whereabouts and status of these locomotives, please let me know!
August 2003 update:
While searching the web, I found a link with a picture of a ZDM-2 on the Indian Railways FAQ website:
http://irfca.org/faq/faq-specs.html#ZDM-2.
Additionally I noticed there is a very interesting locomotive class, built by Henschel [type DHG2500BB] in 1970. It was fitted with the 20 cylinder Maybach MD1080 engine (this was at the time Mercedes & Maybach were merged together at the formation of MTU), rated at about 2500hp and two of these locomotives had Mekydro transmissions, possibly the K252rU. All were withdrawn from IR service by 1995. This is the only locomotive application of the 20 cylinder MD1080 I have found so far............
