I'm currently in the process of re-reading the dune chronicles for the
20-somethingth time, and as I go I'll be adding to this list of people,
places and terms.
Be warned, this is a long task, and I don't expect this page to even
approach completeness for some time to come. that being said, dive in.
Arrakis
The planet Arrakis, known as Dune is the third
planet of the Canopus system. The only known source of Melange,
and the home of the Fremen.
Arrakis is covered almost entirely by desert, though
it is believed to have once been a fertile planet,
which underwent dramatic climate change due to the arrival of the sandworm
at some point prior to its discovery by humans.
Atreides, House
A Great House which traces its origins back to
the house of Atreus in ancient Greece. For twenty six generations House
Atreides ruled the planet Caladan, before the change
of fief to Arrakis in 10,191 AG. House Atreides
was involved in a long running feud with House
Harkonnen, dating back to the Battle of Corrin.
Atreides, Leto (10,140 - 10,191)
The Duke of House atreides,
distaff cousin of Emperor Shaddam IV. Commonly
known as "The Red Duke", Leto was popular in the Landstraad.
Unmarried, Leto had a son, Paul Atreides,
by his Bene-Gesserit concubine the Lady Jessica,
and a Daughter Alia (who was not born until
after his death).
Atreides, Paul (10,176 - )
Son of Duke Leto Atreides
and the Lady Jessica, Paul escaped the fall
of House Atreides on Arrakis
in 10,191 by fleeing to the Fremen tribes, where
he was hailed as the Mahdi and given the fremen names
of Usul and Muad'dib. Paul
later led the Fremen in a revolt, in which he wrested control of Arrakis
(and through its monopoly on Melange, the empire)
from House Harkonnen and House
Corrino.
Paul was married in name only to the Princess
Irulan, but had two children, Leto
and Ghanima by his Fremen concubine, Chani
(Their firstborn son, also called Leto, was killed by the Imperial Sardaukar).
Caladan
The third planet of Delta Pavonis, homeworld
for 26 generations of House Atreides. Major
exports include Pundi Rice.
Chani
A Fremen, Daughter of Liet
Kynes. Chani became concubine and lifelong companion of Paul
Atreides, even after his political marriage to the Princess
Irulan.

Dune
Fremen
The native people of Arrakis,
living outside imperial rule. The fremen are in origin Zensunni
wanderers, who, after escaping slavery and persecution on a number
of planets, including Salusa Secundus
and Bela Tegeuse, made their home on
Arrakis.
The harsh conditions on arrakis led to a number of
adaptations by the fremen to conserve water, ranging from their Stillsuits
to their elongated large intestines, and ultra-fast coagulation. The
amount of Spice in their diet results in fremen
eyes acquiring the blue-in-blue colouration common to all spice addicts,
known to the fremen as the "eyes of Ibad".
Geidi Prime
Only Planet of Ophiuchi B, homeworld of House
Harkonnen. Later (post Tyrant) known
as Gammu.
Guild, The
Name commonly given to the Spacing
Guild.
Harkonnen, House
A Great House, rulers of Geidi
Prime. Noted for their cruelty, the rulers of House Harkonnen were
involved in a long running feud with House Atreides,
dating back to the Battle of Corrin.
Granted Quasi-Fief over Arrakis,
House Harkonnen oversaw spice production there
until their replacement by House Atreides
in 10,191. This was, however, part of a plot in which House Harkonnen,
with aid from the Imperial Sardaukar and the
traitor, Wellington Yueh, took back Arrakis
and killed Duke Leto Atreides.
Kynes, Liet
Imperial Planetologist, son of Pardot
Kynes and father of Chani. Liet was born to
Pardot's fremen wife, and continued his father's work in organising
the Fremen to effect climate change on Arrakis.
Liet assisted the escape of Paul
Atreides and his mother Jessica, after
learning that they shared his dream for a green arrakis. He was left
to die in the desert by the Harkonnens.
Kynes, Pardot
Imperial Planetologist assigned to Arrakis,
Pardot was accepted among the Fremen following
his rescue of three fremen youths from Harkonnen soldiers.
Kynes' research led him to the conclusion that Arrakis
could be changed into a fertile world thorugh a careful process of selective
planting and ecological manipulation, a task which the Fremen accepted
with religious fervour.
Kynes' work was continued by his fremen son, Liet.
Sandtrout
Also known as the "Little Makers", sandtrout
seal off all moisture in a planet's soil, creating a desert environment
suitable for the next stage in their life cycle, the Sandworm.
Fremen children often hunt sandtrout
using small amounts of water, in order to extract a sugary liquid from
them.
Through his spice-saturated state,
Leto II was able to form a sybiotic
relationship with the sandtrout, beginning his 3,000 year metamorphosis.
Sandworm
Only found on Arrakis,
Sandworms can measure over 400 metres, and are composed of a number of
"ring segments". Almost invincible to conventional weaponry,
sandworms are extremely vulnerable to water. Drowning Sandworms produce
the "Water of Life"
Sandworms are attracted to rhythmic vibrations
in the desert, and present a great threat to spice
mining, as well as to those lost in the desert.
Melange is produced as
a by-product of the Sandworm's reprodcutive cycle, as are the Sandtrout.
The Fremen worship sandworms
as a deity "Shai-Hulud". They developed a technique of walking
arhythmically to avoid work attacks, and also rode the worms, using Maker
Hooks to open their ring segments, keeping the worm from submerging
into the sand.
Sardaukar
The military force of House
Corrino. Secretly recruited from the imperial prison planet Salusa
Secundus and renowned for their ferocious combat ability, the Sardaukar
went almost entirely undefeated until their confrontation with the Fremen
during the Arrakis crisis. Before then, the threat
of Sardaukar involvement was usually sufficient to pacify enemies of the
Emperor.
