Below is my agreed brief for my major project, which will make
up 25% of the marks toward my degree.
Tutor: Matt Ottewill
Project Overview:
I will research the area of computer linguistics and speech synthesis,
and attempt to produce a working exemplar to synthesise speech from
user-input text, using a sample set comprising all the basic sounds
of the English language. My research will include analysing commercial
speech synthesis packages, as well as linguistics and phonetics
theory.
This project will comprise theoretical research, as well as practical
application of this research in assembling a comprehensive sample
set of the sounds which comprise the English language, and creating
a functional exemplar in Macromedia Director. I will attempt to
create my programme structure in a platform / programming language
independent format, using flow diagrams and pseudo-code, producing
the exemplar only to demonstrate my solutions efficacy.
Aims:
1. To research the field of computer linguistics and speech
synthesis.
2. To research and produce an effective text-analysis algorithm
to isolate individual sounds/syllables from text strings.
3. To write a structured programme, presenting it as flow
diagrams and/or pseudo-code in order to maintain a platform independent
format.
4. To produce a comprehensive sample set, including all
the necessary elements in the English language, while keeping the
sample set as small as possible. I will also produce guidelines
for creating fresh sample sets to allow further voices
to be added to the system.
5. To produce a working exemplar of my programme structure
in Macromedia Director
