News: 15.03.02

Just added a bunch more stuff to the 3rd Year projects section. More on the way as I finalise the details...

Below is my planned brief for my designated project, which will make up 12.5% of the marks toward my degree. This brief has yet to be confirmed.

Tutor: Matt Ottewill

Project Overview:

In this project, I will investigate the capabilities of Macromedia Director to create a full-scale, platform independent real-time strategy game (along the lines of Command and Conquer or Warcraft). This will involve both programming, to create the basic game engine and artificial intelligence, and design in creating the Interface and game sprites.

My research will include an investigation into popular User Interface styles for this kind of game, as well as the programming techniques used to create a convincing and challenging opponent AI. this research will them be practically applied in the creation of a shock wave RTS game. I will also investigate the possibilities offered by Shockwave for Web integration (through the inclusion of such elements as online league tables / score boards.

Aims:

  1. To research the popular conventions in user interfaces for RTS games.

  2. To research techniques used in artificial intelligence programming for computer opponents in RTS games.

  3. To investigate the possibilities offered by Shockwave for integration of Web elements such as online scoreboards.

  4. To apply my research to the design, programming, and assembly of my own RTS game using Macromedia Director.

  5. To maintain, throughout the design process, a flexible modular programme structure to allow the inclusion of late add-ons, such as new maps and/or new units (possibly through the creation of a proprietary file format).
