The Rowing Parkers |
|
These are all descendents of John Rowing Parker who is named as John Rowen in the Scarning baptisms register.
John was illegitimate as is acknowledged in the will of his father Stephen Rowing as “my illegitimate son to Mary Parker before my marriage to her” Stephen did however, marry Mary soon after John’s birth and therefore all John’s brothers were legitimate.
Whether the circumstances of John’s birth had any effect upon his sense of family identity is open to conjecture. However, he did baptise his first son Stephen Rowing Parker. Stephen must surely be the fist Rowing Parker to have been baptised as such.
However, he did not maintain the name becoming Stephen Rowing in later life.
Other sons of John were named Parker Rowing. Of these sons, George and then James became Rowing Parkers apparently some time after their second marriages. Two of John’s grandchildren Albert (James’ son) and Mary Elizabeth (John’s daughter) also took the name. These two married.
The intriguing fact regarding Mary Elizabeth is that in spite of the fact that she took the name to the altar, father John never did tke the name.
Grandfather John apparently took the name to the grave. His headstone (bearing also the name of his wife) carries the name.
Others who took or inherited the name (including my grandfather), like Steven, reverted to the original name of Rowing. Even James Rowing Parker who took the name by choice, was buried as James Parker Rowing.
It is said, that my grandmother Sarah Rowing would not marry my grandfather until and unless he gave up the name Parker. She was not going to have “folk calling her a nosey Parker”! |
