Chistopher (Sam) worked as a pavior (a layer of paving stones) for a company trading as A.C.W Hobman & Co.
He served during World War One as a gunner (no 76223) with the Royal Field Artillery he enlisted as what would have been on this date a volunteer on the 16th of January 1915. He served in France for over two and a half years.
He received a shrapnel wound to the knee on the 2nd of June 1916
On the occasion of his demobilisation in 1919 he made a claim for a war pension in respect of rheumatism (aggravated by his wound) and chest trouble (which commenced during his hospital confinement)
The claim apparently fell on infertile ground!
He was finally demobilised on the 28th July 1919.
