The marriage certificate describes him as a furnace man residing in Grosmont  in North Yorkshire

Grosmont today is known to tourists as the terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.  It boasts the world's oldest railway tunnel ( now a footway) built by George Stephenson in 1837.  Until then there was nothing.  A few houses then built to house workers servicing the railway was known as "Tunnel End"

The railway connected Whitby to the outside world.  Until then the only reliable access to the port was by sea.
