According to the marriage certificate William was the son of Daniel Rowing.  The only Daniel of appropriate age who seemed to have been around at the time was the husband of Maria and the son of Archibald Rowing and Sarah White.

Moreover this couple did have a son Archibald born in 1833 a date which would correspond well with William’s declared age.  It has not escaped notice either that Williams elder daughter was named Maria (after his mother?)

However, Archibald was baptised in Scarning probably his birthplace as Archibald .  In the 1881 census William declared himself to have been born in East Dereham though this was the nearest town to Scarning a mere 3 miles away.  I have searched the East Dereham register and there is no record of a baptism involving a William Rowing.

Thus doubt remains concerning the parentage of William with the balance of probability tilting towards Daniel above.

 William himself  was a bricklayer.

He came to Leeds around 1861 when he is recorded in the Census of that year as a single man lodging with a family called Hobson. On October 19th of the same year he married Elizabeth.

The older children were all employed  at the time of the 1991 Census  in the textile industry.

John was a press tender.

Maria as a yarn reeler and Mary as a tier-on.

Jacqui Rowing came across a reference of an inscription on a war memorial  relating to a Rowing  I.J. of the Durham L.I.  Killed during the Boer war.  No date was given.

Process of elimination suggests this to be Issac

The 1901 Census shows the family still living at 30 Fox View Armley where according to previous census data they had lived for a number of years.

Three of the children were apparently still living at home.

William is described as a leather bourier whatever that might mean.

Daughter Elizabeth was working in the mills as a weaver.

Harry was following his father’s trade as a bricklayer.

Entries in the military records of Harry suggest that Elizabeth (Bessie) was an asthmatic, a condition which was inherited by Harry himself.
