There was a leaving presentation for her at the Hospital and we were very honoured to be the only parents asked to attend. The praise which poured forth during the speeches was the highest that anyone could wish and the room was charged with emotion. People who have nursed on the frontline for so long deserve and get an enormous amount of respect. Many of the nurses were close to tears and I found it almost impossible to say goodbye. For me this was one of the few times during Max's treatment that any emotion broke through.

The nurses, doctors and consultants have my deepest respect. The consultants do a job which entails them informing maybe one family a week that there is no longer anything they can do for the child. I don’t care how case hardened you become, something has got to rub off, you have to be affected in some way. And they are.

The doctors and nurses show a dedication and care which I find absolutely incredible. This is done day in and day out and with little respite. All these people leave me feeling very humble.
