Moans of pain.

“How are you feeling Max?”

“I don't feel well. Do you remember Zordon in the Power Rangers movie?”

“Yes, I remember.”

I did. The character lay in a glass mausoleum as his life force was slowly being drained away by his enemies. Max was speaking quietly and was very weak.

“I feel like Zordon. I’ve got no energy. I'm frightened that I’m dying.”

Sara and I pointed out that Zordon had got better. Sara talked to him for a long time about being positive and how he must try and help himself get better. Later I did the same.

“Maxie, I know you've got the strength to fight. You are a tough little boy. When your back hurts you won’t let us help you. You insist on sorting yourself out. You fight over the medicines which is good in a way because it shows you've still got that strength to fight back but to get you through this we need to work together. If you need to fight, you must fight the illness and not us. When we fight, it makes me upset and makes you upset and we end up going nowhere. In the end you take the medicines anyway so all the fighting is for nothing. The enemy is your illness. You, me and Mum and the doctors need to work together to fight the illness. I know you hate the medicines and it's horrible taking them, but they are what we need to help you get better. You amaze me with how you cope. I watch you and cannot imagine how you manage. I don't think I could cope with some of the things that you go through and yet you do. I hate fighting with you. All I want to do is make you better and I want to do anything that will make it easier for you.”

“When you are feeling down you should talk to me or Mummy. I know it’s difficult and that sometimes you just feel angry, but it does help to talk about it. If you find that you can't walk then you must just keep trying, and eventually you will find that you can do it. You'll surprise yourself. Try, try and try again. The doctors are worried that if you stop trying to walk that your back will go stiff and then they won't be able to get you to walk again. The only way to stop this is if you try to help yourself. We can't make you walk. It has to come from inside you. You must use your anger to fight and to start walking again.”
