I decided to e-mail Tim Walford before putting this article on the web to see what his views were about someone else carrying out a public build of one of his kits and in the reply that I received he was keen that I should point out that the LANGPORT is an advanced kit and should not be undertaken by a novice unaided, he suggested that for the newcomer to kit building some of the other kits in his range would be far more suitable. ( see his website for details ).
To date all I have acheived so far is a fairly thorough read of the detailed build manual which also includes a full set of circuit diagrams and pictorial view of the component layout on the PCB.
A couple of things I have noticed which seem a bit unusual compared to any of the other radios that I have built are that on the RX side almost all of the amplification is carried out at audio level ( apart from the single IF amp TR104 ) and secondly the IF filter is used for the transmitter as well as the receiver ( He describes it as a bi directional superhet ).
Next update will be when I have started the build
