Live at The Monarch, Camden, 30th June 2001
'Chaos in Camden - A Midsummer Night's Scene' was how this latest outing by John's Children was described on their flyers. This gig took place during one of those barmy hot London nights on the 30th of June. The Monarch is a small(ish) size venue which lends itself to a great atmosphere. Unlike the previous JC gig I had seen at The Borderline (London) in '97 there were few Bolan'faces' to be seen. This years line up comprised of Andy Ellison (vocals/guitar); Chris Townson (drums); Boz Boorer (guitar - Morrissey band and one time Polecat) and Martin Gordon (bass - ex Radio Stars and Sparks). Myself and Andy Green made the long trek up to London from Daventry and Bristol respectively - neither of us were disappointed. Coming on stage around 10pm the band started with But She's Mine and followed with the brilliant Sara Crazy Child (which is Andy Ellison favourite Bolan song). The following song was Mustang Ford (as opposed to Go Go Girl as JC recorded it). One song which I was (very pleasantly) surprised to hear was a superb version of Cosmic Dancer - that one took me by surprise! the following song, neither a Bolan or JC song, was brilliant - a superb heavy cover of Eleanor Rigby. Throughout the set Andy had made excursions into the audience and at one time was playing guitar on the bar while the rest of the band were on stage at the other end of the room.

For most of Midsummer Night's Scene Andy was sat on the floor behind the bar - as always with JC entertainment was high on the agenda. As the evening drew to a close Andy got up to more antics throwing out digestive biscuits and party poppers to the audience. They finished the set with Desdemona (Chris' favourite because 'everybody knows it') and then encored with Lazy Sunday and Day Tripper/Daddy Rolling Stone. I like John's Children and I would recommend anyone who has the opportunity to see them to go and see them. Out of the fifteen songs played seven of them were Marc songs and remember, with the exception of Cosmic Dancer, this is the way these songs would have sounded in Marc's time with Andy on vocals. All in all it was great night out with the Children. As a footnote, some of the more observant of you may have noticed the speaker cabinet behind Boz - if I need to explain the significance of it then you are probably on the wrong web page (if you don't know the answer - ask a friend!). Anyone for digestive biscuits?
