Background
I have been building carts for over 20 years now. Ever the thrifty person I decided to build my own cart rather than going out and spending lots of money on a ready built one. After a few years and a few different carts we decided to take up FEI Combined Driving. This meant I had to build a cart capable of doing all three phases of this sport. I went out with my trusty tape measure and started to look at other peoples carts. A couple of months later I had built my first marathon vehicle. Whilst I was working on it I kept on saying "this is a really awesome cart" and hence forth the name seemed to stick. Friends liked the look of my cart and asked me to build them one, this led on to two, three etc etc.

Construction Technique
My carts usually have a main chassis comprising 50mm square section side rails into which slot the round steel shafts. The rest of the chassis is made using 25mm square box and 20mm tubing being used for the dash and seating supports. The floor is either water permeable mesh or varnished marine ply with rubber matting. Suspension is usually torsion rubber suspension which one finds on small trailers, although I modify it for our use. Wheels are usually steel carriage wheels with twin taper roller bearings and either normal hard rubber tyres or low profile rubber tyres. (wheels are bought in from another source) The whole chassis is then sent off to be powder coated. This provides a fantastically durable finish and is well worth the additional cost. I have tried several powder coaters and eventually found one that gives a superb, thick finish. I find that I need to allow for the thickness of the powder coat during construction.
